As one of the top-rated, premier business schools available in the United States, within the southwest region, you will find the ACBSP accredited Grand Canyon University (GCU) nestled within the Arizonan desert in Phoenix. Their mission statement incorporates; Challenge which inspires its thousands of students to be better servant leaders with cutting-edge business skills and values that are vital to driving organizational success and to have a positive impact within society. The University offers quality education through its academic excellence and relevant curriculum that is of real-world value which in turn, cultivates within the students, the highest levels of critical thinking and analytical skills that are required by today’s demanding business environments. In doing so, the College of Business dedicates itself to incorporate and implement its three pillars of Entrepreneurial Spirit, Innovation and Servant Leadership that provides its students with the competitive edge needed in the world of business. The College strongly believes its methodology will prepare students to be results-driven business professionals and leaders and recognizes the need quality education and training within the three pillars listed. GCU is a recognized expert in its three-pillar philosophy that helps students achieve a successful career by better preparing the students and professionals to become highly successful individuals with in the workforce. Taking a deeper look at the three pillars, we can associate a special relationship where one pillar matches another. In today’s technology and trend-driven era, people must be able to be able to make changes and assimilate to be able to keep up with the ever-changing, fast paced world of business. More and more Universities are pumping out highly educated

    Robert K. Greenleaf’s definition of servant leadership is one which is based on teamwork and community while seeking to involve others in the decision making and is strongly based in ethical and caring behavior while enhancing the growth of people (Spears, 1996).     As we develop into leaders, one of the things we need to know is what it means to be a servant leader. Today such examples are greatly lacking. Servant leadership is a choice by a leader to follow the example of The Jesus Christ and The Mother Teresa and lead by serving, becoming a bondservant and giving his life for others. Servant leadership is an inner attitude of the heart by which a person chooses to place himself or herself under the leadership of Jesus Christ and Mother Teresa. Christ often invited people to follow him. Some followed and many did not. One of the things to understand is the difference between obedience and submission. A person in authority or general leader in our present society can command for obedience. Submission, on the other hand, is a choice by the follower to choose to follow a leader, and also an inner attitude of the heart can never be commanded. Some chose to submit to Christ and followed him. Many chose not to submit to Christ and followed other religious leaders. Christ gives us the freedom to make the choice not to follow or submit. Most religious leaders out there serve the people and community first. The characteristics of a servant leadership as seen by Robert Greenleaf are “listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people and building the community.” (Greenleaf, 2002, p. #19-25)…
