Unit 4 – Understanding inclusive learning and teaching in lifelong learning

1. Evaluate a range of learning and teaching strategies in lifelong learning. Within your answer you must cover the following giving examples: * An analysis of a range of learning and teaching strategies (minimum of 3) used in own specialism * An evaluation of the effectiveness of learning and teaching approaches in own specialist area in meeting needs of learners * An evaluation of inclusive learning

There are different styles of teaching, as each pupil will learn in a different style, these include visual learners, auditory learners and kinesthetic learners. These learners all need different ways of helping them to learn. For example a auditory learner learns by using auditory awareness, they prefer to listen rather than watch or take part. Visual learners prefer to watch rather than listen or take part. These learners prefer the use of overhead projectors, flip charts and visual stimulates to learn from. They would take a step back in practical activities as watch others as they perform the task. A benefit of this learning style is that is it the best way to deliver a lot of information and it can also be printed for hard copy to be kept by the learners when needed. A down fall to this is if there is along lecture a lot of the information might not be obtained as people will lose interest and might not be able to concentrate for the entire time. I would use this style of teaching when delivering information on the back ground of pole dancing as use of pictures and videos would be needed at this stage of learning. Auditory learners depends on hearing and speaking as a main way of learning. Auditory learners must be able to hear what is being said in order to understand and may have difficulty with instructions that are written. They also use their listening and repeating skills to sort through the information that is given to them. These learners are similar to visual and would learn well from lectures with flipcharts and over head projectors as long as the teacher is talking through the notes and explaining each area of the subject. A benefit of this form of learning is it is easy to deliver a lecture and talk to these learners to help them process the information. A negative side to this is that not all information might be obtained and the use of written information to help them remember might not work aswell as it would with visual learners. I would use auditory learning through my courses as I would need to talk through every move and trick within the pole syllabus.

Kinesthetic learners learn best by taking part in practical activities to learn. Performing tasks and doing role-plays aid in this learner to learn. A down fall to this type of teaching is that some subjects would not have any reason to do kinesthetic teaching and it is also a lot more time consuming that the other two learning styles as organizing the activities, finding the space and organizing the groups would take time for the teacher. A benefit to this learning style is that it would keep a lot of learners involved and keep their interest for longer, as well as being fun for the learners to participate in. With the pole instructor course this type of learning is used a lot, as the learners would need to demonstrate and teach each move to others through out the entire course. Whilst teaching a pole fitness class, which is set out as a hourly lesson per week either during the day or evening depending on the learner. This can either be 1-2-1 or group classes all three styles of teaching will be used within this class. First the instructor will demonstrate the move – which will help the visual learner, then the instructor will talk through each part of the move – which will help the auditory learner and finally the learner then gets to try the move themselves which will help the kinesthetic learners.
