Under The Dome: A Case Study
This tower replaced an earlier wooden structure. The new tower was much taller when originally constructed. The greater height was required because visual sighting of incoming ships was required. GPS tracking of ships and modern communications allowed the observation deck to be lowered to the current level. TV fans of Under the Dome may recognize the building as the location of the fictional city’s radio station.

Indian Trail Tree at Keziah Park, c. 1600

Cape Fear Indians are said to have bent the live oak sapling to mark a trail. The tree is estimated to be 400-800 years old and was once featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not newspaper feature.

Fifty years ago, the opening below the bend was large enough for an average size adult

In the essay “Good Oak” in part one of A Sand County Almanac, Leopold is supplied with wood from an oak tree to warm himself on the cold winter days and nights. One night the Oak is struck by a bolt of lightning and it is decided by Leopold and other woodsmen to remove the damaged tree. As Leopold and the other men cut through the tree they witness the same history experienced by the Oak. They cut through the rings and go backwards into time. Each ring represents one year the tree stood tall. I choose this essay not because of a personal experience, but because the essay inspired me. While I was reading the many essays throughout the book this one always stuck in the back of my mind. I responded well to this essay because of the way Leopold…

As a suspension bridge, the towers needed to hold the cables that hold the roadway. Thus, these towers had to be extremely strong and stable and had to be sunk down. In order to accomplish that, Washington Roebling started a new concept. He ordered a construction of caissons. These caissons were sealed, watertight, airtight chambers. They were made of wood and it would dumped into the water. In this way they would sunk down to the very deep end and all the water that is filled inside of caisson would be pumped out (History, 2010).…
