On her journey to self-discovery, Taylor Greer manages to overcome her weaknesses and start a new way of life and while traveling she obtains a small Indian child (whom she subsequently names Turtle) who would later prove to have a huge impact on the course of her life. Throughout the novel, The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver, one discovers Taylor and Turtle’s process to obtain a better life: to escape, to seek a new way of life and to discover oneself by depending on one another. Symbols constantly present inside of the storyline appear as subtle details throughout the plot. Kingsolver uses subjects such as birds to represent Taylor and Turtle's situations and plants to symbolize growth and dependence.…

In modern society, it is very uncommon to find someone who does not watch any form of video entertainment. Television is so common in the better countries in the world and society does embrace it in their everyday lives. If society was asked, “How much TV do they watch daily”? They may give a wide variety of responses. Some the answers may range in between one to possibly even over twelve hours a day! The author Terrance Chiusano makes a statement on how much we are attracted and impacted by watching television in his poem, “The Screen”. The video clip mesmerizes the passengers in the plane and got their full, undivided attention. This is in contrast to when the flight attendant acted out the procedures in person. When acted out in person, the passengers just simply looked out the windows, possibly at the engines or even at their hands while the lady was preaching on how to save their lives in the event of an emergency. In The Screen, the passengers clearly prefer to obtain important information through electronic media, such as the movie. This is because just like in modern society, people want to information to be somewhat entertaining and for it to be presented quickly and precisely. If the message is boring or too long, people will simply stop giving their undivided attention. Chiusano is clearly trying to convey this message.…

I have lived on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation here in Belcourt, ND basically my whole life. I am ashamed to say I do not know a lot about my culture. However, I am not ashamed about my beliefs. I was raised in a Christian home we went to the Assembly of God church every Sunday, Sunday night and Wednesdays. My family was very dedicated to the church, with that being said I was not allowed to participate in the Native American ways. I’ve heard people talk in school about the medicine wheel, dream catchers and other things and I heard stories from my great grandfather about Native rallies. I have never heard of the sacred tree but in reading it reminded me of the movie Avatar. I remember watching Avatar and feeling like they were telling the story of my people. I remember feeling very connected even thou I never grew up that way, this is how the book made me feel again connected.…

The savanna is characterized by its variety of grasses, however the grasses are not at all lush. The grasses are often thick clumps with bare ground and shrubs in between. The types of grass in the savanna are: Rhodes grass, red oats grass, lemon grass, star grass, finger grass, love grass, Bermuda grass, and elephant grass. Trees are very difficult to grow in the savanna because there isn’t much rainfall. The few types of trees grown in the savanna are: the umbrella-shaped acacia tree, which grows flowers at the very top, and the baobab tree. During the dry seasons, most plants shrivel and die.…

Of all the living beings inhabiting this earth, trees are out best friends. Mother Nature,in her infinite wisdom, has gifted them to man to live in harmony with him and to be of greatservice to him.Besides fruits, trees provide important raw materials for our industries. Industries provide employment to people. The wood for furniture, housing, railway carriages and shipscome from trees. Wood is also used for fuel and for making charcoal which is used as fuel. From trees we get wood - pulp to make paper and artificial yarns (like nylon). Trees also giveus products such as spices, rubber, turpentine, eucalyptus oil and gum. We also get honey andmany valuable things for medicine from forests. We get so many things from forests that forests are rightly known as ‘ green gold’Trees provide shade to tired travellers and animals and shelter to innumerable birds andinsects. Trees keep the environment clean. They absorb harmful carbon dioxide from the air and fill the atmosphere with precious life - sustaining oxygen. In this way they reduce air pollution. Therefore, trees are called the lungs of nature. Forests retain humidity and attractrains. There will be no rain if there are no trees. It is for this reason that trees are known asrain catchers. In fact, all our basic necessities like, air, water, food, clothing and shelter comedirectly or indirectly from trees. We thus, owe our very existence to trees. If there were no trees, there would be no rain and land would turn into an arid desert.Mankind would perish for want of food, drinking water, fresh air and sufficient humidity. Sowe should ever remain grateful to…
