You instantly recognises the brotherly bond they share as they are more relaxed around each other and constantly compete “Homer and I had spent all our free time together when we were little, and we were still close…” Ellie on page 16. Homer is all about individualism and is quick to voice his opinions. He tends to act before he thinks as well and doesn’t consider the consequences as displayed in his latest escapade before the camp “He’d just been caught pouring a line of solvent across the road and lighting it from his hiding place when a car got close…” Ellie on page 13. Homer may seem confident but he is actually quite insecure, establishing a false reputation as a disrespectful and insensitive ‘guys guy’ to gain popularity and fit…

An important action of Ellie was when she blows up a lawnmower and kills three soldiers in order to escape from Mrs Alexander’s garden, which shows the theme of courage, because even though she was reluctant to, Ellie was forced herself to kill them to ensure her and her friend’s safety. The theme of survival is also presented when Ellie think back to when she killed the soldiers – “Had I killed out of love of my friends, as part of a noble crusade to rescue friends and family and keep our land free? Or had I killed because I valued my life above that of others?” Ellie learns that is they were to survive this war, they would have to do anything it takes - even if it meant having to kill soldiers. Loyalty is a theme that is prevalent throughout all the characters in the novel, but Ellie in particular shows this theme the most. Ellie presents this theme by not abandoning Robyn and Lee when they didn’t show up at the allocated place they were meant to meet up at. Although they had to leave first, Ellie still went back to find them. The ways these themes are presented by Ellie are interesting because it shows many aspects of Ellie’s character and personality at the same…

“Tomorrow When The War Began” by John Marsden, is a novel of survival, friendship, love and war. He uses many language techniques (e.g. simile, metaphor, personification, oxymoron, irony, symbol, allusion etc.) to get across to the reader the importance of each of the themes discussed. He also uses these techniques to set the mood in each chapter and to help emphasise each major point in the novel. “We’ve learnt a lot and had to figure out what’s important- what matters, what really matters.”- Ellie…

A theme that I found important in the extended text Tomorrow, When the War Began, by John Marsden was change. Change is when people have things happen to their circumstances and are forced to think or believe differently. Change was important because it was a dominant theme in the novel as the characters – young teenagers – were forced to cope with the devastation of their lives and their environment caused by war. The theme of change is also important because it is something that affects us all at some time in our lives. We never know what the outcome will be for us, and just hope that our personal skills will make us resilient enough to cope with whatever life brings us.…
