I think that the fundamental similarity between our cultures is the need to help those in need, compassion. When September 11th. happened the whole nation was shocked and hurt. Even those who didn’t have family in the twin towers felt the need to help. The same happened with the Masai tribe, they didn’t have the money or the resources to help us with, but they had what they thought was the next best thing; cows.…
Such cultural differences can lead to dramatic variations in how children are raised. Parents from…
In the book Funny in Farsi by Firoozeh Dumas, there are five concepts from our textbook, Lives Across Cultures: Cross-Cultural Human Development by Harry W. Gardiner and Corrine Kosmitzki. Three of the concepts are components of Firoozeh Dumas’ developmental niche such as the psychology of her caretakers, the customs of her child care, and the social settings of her daily life growing up. The other two concepts are individualism and ethnocentrism.…
Around the world there are thousands of cultures. Each culture having its similarities and differences. Elements of six distinct cultures will be compared and contrasted. The following elements of each culture will be compared with each other: education, shelter/clothing, religion, language, and government. The six countries/cultures that will be compared are the United States of America, Mexico, Haiti, Australia, Kenya, and France.…
I believe that cultures are equally good and while the may vary greatly in certain beliefs, many cultures are also similar. For example, many cultures around the world have some type of “coming of age” ceremony. The ceremonies may be vastly different, but the purpose is essentially the same across the different cultures.…
Even though there seems to be a lot of differences between these two cultures, there is also some similarities. For example, usually when a hunter comes back with meat, he is praised. Everyone thanks him for his good work. Same thing with a father coming back from a day of fishing or…

The documentary Babies by Thomas Balmès is a film that takes place in four very different locations around the world. The documentary follows four babies and their families from when they are first born as they grow up and are able to walk. We watch Ponijao grow up in Namibia, Bayar grow up in Mongolia, Hattie grow up in San Francisco, and Mari grow up in Tokyo. Because the babies are from such different places, the documentary allows us to see what it is like growing up in cultures that we are currently unfamiliar with. The film opens up your eyes to the various forms of living in other areas around the world. In this paper, I will discuss the universal themes I noticed, my personal reflection of the film, the various parenting philosophies on how to raise children, human nature, and the additional culture I would have like to see added to the film.…

How a child is raised and taught to live is a unique aspect of every culture that exists throughout the world. Rogoff states that members of each society are “prepared by both our cultural and biological heritage to use language and other cultural tools and to learn from each other.” (Orienting Concepts, P.3) Through this definition it is easy to see why child-rearing techniques are unique to each and every society. The people of any society use their own tools and their own language to teach the youth of their society what exactly it means to be part of their culture. For example, one does not see many women in the United States who are breast-feeding on the metro. This is something that is a much more private event in the United States because the people of America are less open about this daily activity. The families of Spain see it as something more open and natural and thus freely do it throughout public when their baby is hungry. This is a more obvious example of a cross-cultural…
One other interesting fact I found out that differed these two cultures from one another was who the children went to after a divorce. The Indian culture gave the husband custody of the children as they generally gave the males more importance. They had a matrilineal society where the ancestry was traced through the men. There was even a quote in the Conformity and Conflict book that explained the man was considered the one who planted seeds while the woman was the field in which they did it, explaining the sexual relationship between a husband and wife. In the !Kung culture the children stayed with their mother.…
Another big difference that i have noticed from comparing their culture to ours, is their values and beliefs. People in different cultures use culturally defined standards to decide what is desirable, good, and beautiful and serve as a broad guideline for social living. People in every culture weither it be here in the United States or in Mexico, use values to make…
‘Babies’ is a documentary film which chronicles the first year of life of four babies spanning the globe. Documentarian Thomas Balmès fans out to the grasslands of Namibia, the plains of Mongolia, the high rises of Tokyo and the busy streets of San Francisco in a study of culture, societal structure, geography and tradition, along with parental love and the impact all these elements have on child rearing. In the hunting and gathering society of Namibia and pastoral Mongolia, Balmès follows Ponijao and Bayar and in postindustrial Tokyo and San Francisco we are introduced to Mari and Hattie. While the 1:18 film has no real dialogue, viewers are able to get a distinct feel for each baby’s personality, the role they play within the family structure and perhaps most importantly, the universal undying love the parents display towards their offspring with the ultimate goal to raise happy and healthy children.…

Furthermore, when you travel to other parts of the country you will find that practices in culture and beliefs vary greatly. It is interesting to know that even when you come from the same nation, speak the same language as everyone else in your country; there are still a…
