Terry Fox was a Canadian athlete and cancer research activist who attempted to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Terry Fox received Osteosarcoma which resulted with one of his legs being amputated. When he was in the hospital, he looked around and saw all the kids who had cancer. Seeing the kids with cancer inspired him to run for cancer. Although the spread of his cancer eventually forced him to end his run and result in his death, his efforts resulted in a lasting, worldwide legacy. The Terry Fox Run is held every year in honor of Terry’s deed.

His hopes of completing the run and his marathon ended when he died due to the cancer. In addition to being the youngest person ever named a Companion of the Order of Canada, Terry Fox won the many Awards as the nation's top sportsman and was named Canada's Newsmaker of the Year in both 1980 and 1981. Considered a national hero, he has had many buildings, statues, roads, and parks named in his honour across the country. Terry Fox was born on July 28, 1958, in Winnipeg. His family moved to British Columbia, then settled in Port Coquitlam. His parents loved their family, and his mother was especially protective of her children. it was through. His passion was for basketball and though he shorter than the other kids and was a poor player at the time, Terry Fox sought to make his school team in grade eight. Terry Fox’s physical education teacher and basketball coach at Mary Hill Junior High School, felt he was better suited to be a distance runner and encouraged him to take up the sport.     The beginning was tough. He spent most of his time falling down and picking himself up. He kept going, though, and after more than a year, and over 4,800 kilometres of running, he announced his plans to his family. His goal was for every Canadian to donate just one dollar to his cause.
