The Power of One/Animal Farm
Essay Power has many facets which are evident in society. Discuss in reference to the core text studied and the supplementary material In the novel, Animal Farm by George Orwell and the film, The Power of One directed by John G. Avildsen show many aspects of power which are evident in society. Themes further expressed in both materials include, Power through leadership and corruption, power through violence and submission, power of control over the intellectually inferior and . These are all displayed throughout both of the texts and are evident in society. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Orwell uses many characters to emphasize leadership and corruption. Napoleon the pig is made leader through deception and abuse of his power. He is selfish and beguiling and becomes consumed in control and authority that he himself becomes corrupted. For e.g. Napoleon demands the seven commandments which include, 'Whatever goes up on two legs is an enemy, No animal shall wear clothes, No animal shall drink alcohol and No animal shall kill any other animal.' By the end of the book, he alone breaks every one of these rules for his personal benefit. He also, uses his power to change the commandments in order to cover his wrong actions. Napoleon has absolute power over the animals and farms, he knows this, so he can break the rules and misuse his authority for his gain. Power demoralises those who possess it. The director John G. Avildsen represents the themes of leadership and corruption also through characters. Jaapie Botha the main antagonist in the film, had been PK's most feared rival, ever since childhood. He had abused and tortured little PK, nearly killed him. Many years later, Jaapie becomes a sergeant under the South Africa Police Department. When he heard of PK and Maria, he seeks out his vengeance against him. He beats Gideon Duma and others at the gym, and then has the gym closed down and burned. The gym being the only race-mixed place where both

"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely," said by John Dalberg-Acton. This quote applies to George Orwell's political novella, Animal Farm: A Fairy Story, which symbolizes the Russian Revolution by portraying various leaders and supporters though allegorical characters. Throughout the fable, Orwell strongly emphasizes the point of how power can easily corrupt the ruler of a society. At the beginning of the story the animals of Manor Farm defeat the tyrannical Mr. Jones after many years of torture in an effort to create a better life for themselves. However, when a new leader comes to power, their original idea of an idealistic society, when put into reality, becomes a dystopia. Napoleon utilizes fear and manipulation…

Power is the ability to influence people to perform in a specific way. The ambition of having power, has made humans influence other peoples’ lives and nature. For example, writer David Hume presented and criticized the “is-ought problem—the notion that we can derive what ought to be from an example of what is” (Barash 283). People are not satisfied with what is natural, so they want to go furthermore and try to change it, using any sources they have within their reach. We are unstoppable, the more we have the more we want.…

The quote written by Lord Acton, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Relates to the novel Animal Farm for the reason that in Animal Farm power influences the characters, the pigs in particular because the power they obtained blinded them of their initial idea, which was to build a fair and just society on Manor Farm. Using the ability to persuade the other animals on the farm, to their advantage, the pigs seized the commanding role on the farm. With that they continue to abuse their power until they became exactly like those who they were rebelling against, the humans. Consequently, this shows the effect power has if used immorally.…

The theme of "Animal Farm" is implied. Throughout my reading, and from what I have read about the book, it is safe to know that the book moves on a parallel with the Russian revolution, and the events afterwards. With that said, the theme is power. Power is constantly shifting throughout the story in some form. In the beginning we are met with the power of Mr. Jones and Old Major. Later on, the power shifts from Mr. Jones and Old Major to all of the animals. The entire story revolves around this pattern of the importance of power. Power, in Animal Farm, allows one group of animals control the others, and manipulate the rules. As well, no matter where you are in the story, power is playing some role or influence on a main…

By using historical criticism, one can analyze the causes and effects of ruthless ambition. During the WWII era, there was widespread corruption in many nations, as seen in Germany with Hitler and Russia with Stalin. This time period of chaos exposed the lack of compassion among humans. Similar to this era, there were cultural and political struggles among the humans and animals in the farm as well. Ironically, in the animal’s struggle to free themselves of human dictatorship they end up oppressing their own kind.…

George Orwell believed in using axioms (a statement or proposition that is regarded as being established, accepted, or self-evidently true), to prove or describe a point he has previously made. One axiom in particular that Orwell uses is as follows: “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” This statement can be proved true not only through works of fiction, but also through actual historical and current events. First of all, the theme of power through corruption reverberates through George Orwell’s book, Animal Farm. One example is his use of Napoleon’s leadership. Napoleon’s original goal is to create a successful and prosperous farm run by animals. Napoleon takes over Mr. Jones’s spot as the leader of the…

Why is it that people with high authority make so many mistakes? Well that is what the story looks at. In Animal Farm by George Orwell, the author studies the topic of power.
