This is proven once Matt attempts to assert his authoritative position by daring to “…demand a birthday kiss.”(Farmer, 109) from Maria. He realizes he is treading boundaries he should not cross, yet his cockiness to prove that he is not some nuisance is too great. Rather than become ambitious, though, he realizes his mistake, instead of becoming power hungry like El Patron. It is crucial to note that Matt makes plenty mistakes, most unintentionally. One prime example is his kidnapping of Furball, Maria’s dog and unfortunately,”…killing her dog.”(Farmer 133). After every step he misses, the Alacran family is there to push him down further. The ordeals Matt goes through are presented in a variety of ways; the betrayal of the Alacran’s and Tam-Lin; his will to survive when trapped in a massive field of bones; or the way he returned to Opium with death as an imminent threat. Matteo Alacran was born a fighter, and he lived that way…

Brad talks about how the death of his grandfather had led to the cause of his situations "He was more like a father to me, everything I knew about being a man and a good person, I'd learned from him" (Westcott). This quote is important because to Brad, his grandfather was the father figure he looked up to during his childhood. He was the one who thought Brad how to be a responsible father and it's difficult for brad to forget about him. Brad and his wife had recently been released from serving years of prison for growing marijuana. His son had been sentenced for sixteen hours of community service for punching his classmate at school. His family was disarray and seeking employment for jobs was difficult. In this paper I've given you three main reasons why Matt should have become friends with the Indians. First so he would be able to survive with what he had and not die of starvation. Second so he wouldn't go insane because he had been away from people so long. Third so he would be able to learn from Attean and teach Attean and his tribe. For those three reasons, I think and hopefully you do also that “Matt should have become friends with the…

He treats all of them very well by spoiling them with treats, but in the end, they all end up dying for the same purpose, to keep El Patron alive. This is until Matt. This is why there are multiple clones in the mirror. Matt states many things throughout the book that shows he feels like a reflection of El Patron and cares about El Patron even though he knows that El Patron is harvesting him for organs to live longer. Much like his prison of a home, mirrors do not comfort people and often show defects. Matt spent much of him time alone with his music knowing that his life could end at any time. "Underneath Matt felt a hollowness. He understood he was only a photograph of a human, and that meant he wasn't really important. Photographs could lie forgotten in drawers for years. They could be thrown away." (Farmer Eighty…

It is evident from the beginning of the novel that Mattie is extremely fond of her father and looks up to him with the highest regards. As her father mounts his horse to set off to Fort Smith with Chaney to purchase ponies, Mattie proclaims that he “might have been a gallant knight of old” (14). Much like a knight, her father is courageous, thoughtful and kind-hearted, which is shown by his gesture to help Chaney. He is a man virtue, but his views of the world are ‘old’ and outdated and in the end, lead to his demise at the hands of Chaney himself. This would be the last time Mattie would see her father alive again. She was raised mostly by her father, having her morals and values instilled by him; he raised her to be strong-willed, intelligent and independent, much like the men of their time.…
