Character diversity, One of the strongest assets in The Great Gatsby to get you hooked . For example Nick Carraway, the narrator and one of the main characters of the book goes from being indifferent and not judging people to having his own opinion by the end of the book. Fitzgerald writes, " Tom is just the worst. It's one thing to have a mistress; it's quite another to embarrass your wife and friends by rubbing that mistress in their face...'' (Fitzgerald 63)This relates to Nick changing throughout the story because in the beginning he was told never to judge and throughout the story he was changing. Nick is just one of the many characters that change throughout the book
The main theme was a tragic love story. This was one of the most

Her husband, Tom Buchannan also believed that Daisy was a prize. To Tom, it seemed, that Daisy was a trophy wife, someone he could show off, not care about, come back, and she would still be there. What brought them together was money, the thing that they both loved and had in common. Nick summed up her love for money well, “She wanted her life shaped now, immediately—and the decision must be made by some force, of money…” (Fitzgerald, 151). Daisy didn’t care about who she loved more when she had to pick Tom or Gatsby; she cared about the money while she was making one of the biggest decisions of her life. To Tom, Daisy was a beautiful woman who he would love to have for his wife. Tom and Daisy were alike in that way, neither of them cared about personality or values; they cared about their reputation. It wasn’t Daisy’s disposition that made Tom marry her; it was her looks and reputation that he found attractive.…

Tom is very narrow-minded, and believes he is much superior to everyone, and therefore, should have everything. This is clearly seen when he brings up his opinion over a book he claims he has been reading, as he says, “this fellow has worked out the whole thing. It’s up to us, who are the dominant race, to watch out or these other races will have control of things”(Pg.16). Tying in with the fact that Tom believes he deserves everything, it becomes clear he also loves to have total control over everything, even people. Thus, ultimately treating people like his property, and manipulating them along the way. This is seen by the fact that Daisy stays by Tom’s side, even though she and everybody clearly know about his mistress. He is able to not only have his wife, but his mistress on the side, who he parades around publicly, to his wife’s humiliation,” I was confused and a little disgusted as I drove away. It seemed to me that the thing for Daisy to do was to rush out of the house, child in arms — but apparently there were no such intentions in her head. As for Tom, the fact that he ‘had some woman in New York.’ was really less surprising than that he had been depressed by a book”(Pg.23). When a situation does not seem to go his way, Tom reacts aggressively, and violently, in an effort to manipulate the situation to benefit him. During one encounter with his mistress, Myrtle, she blatantly causes a scene and rebels against him, “some time toward midnight Tom Buchanan and Mrs. Wilson stood face to face, discussing in impassioned voices whether Mrs. Wilson had any right to mention Daisy's name. Making a short deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand”(Pg.41). He is definitely not the type of person to allow people to disobey him or humiliate him, or to even feel like control is slipping away from his…

Since the beginning, Gatsby knew that to attain the American Dream he would have to create the persona of Jay Gatsby from James Gatz. Jay Gatsby is a rich, successful man from West Egg in New York while James Gatz is the penniless son of unsuccessful farm people. Evidently, Gatsby grasps that to attain the American Dream he absolutely can not be a lower class laborer and must be born affluent. In addition, Gatsby is revealed as a hard worker when his father presents a schedule that exhibits, “‘Jimmy was bound to get ahead’” (Fitzgerald 173). He refers to the anal schedule of self-improvement Gatsby grinded himself through. However, it is also revealed Gatsby earned his money through illegal activities when Meyer Wolfsheim, a mob leader, tells the narrator, “‘Start him! I made him’” (Fitzgerald 173). This exposes that Gatsby believs that in order to create the American Dream from nothing, integrity is impossible. In the end of the novel, everything is taken away from Gatsby when he is murdered by another victim of the hopeless American Dream, Wilson. Evidently, Daisy and her husband, Tom Buchanan, two people of privilege, can be linked to the intricate events leading to Gatsby’s downfall. Therefore, Fitzgerald reveals that all of Gatsby’s hard work and his own life was obliterated by the elite who were born into the American…

This quarter I read The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The Great Gatsby is a fiction novel published in 1925. It takes place in New York, 1922 and follows the story of a great man named Gatsby. Although Gatsby is the main character, the book is in perspective and supposedly written by Nick Carraway, a friend of Gatsby. This novel has a very developing story line that hits all kinds of moods, happy, sad, and mysterious.…

When Daisy "...went over to Gatsby and pulled his face down, kissing him on the mouth" (116) just as Tom left the room, she blatantly abandons her poise and self-control, and establishes herself as a cheater as well. Nick describes Daisy's charming nature at the beginning of the novel, "[She] held my hand for a moment, looking up into my face, promising that there was no one in the world she so much wanted to see. That was the way she had" (8-9), yet by the climax of the story, Daisy's infidelity proves to the reader that unfaithfulness pertains to even the most unexpected. Fitzgerald characterizes Daisy in a much more positive way than Tom, yet both married people cheat on their…

Fitzgerald is also ver reflective, There are several important passages at which Nick stops and reflects on the meaning of the action, almost interpreting the events. This helps us to understand the meaning, behind the events he has witnessed. My character also has a very reflective nature, he analyzes the events throughly, which shows us how manipulative Daisy in fact is, ' She was like a mice trap. And the trap doesn't run around behind her victim. It's tempting with cheese and waiting. '…
