The Challenges and Personal Development

My friend, John, is a college student who only lives in a life of studying what is required and getting the homework done in a quick, average manner. I spend the extra time studying as an over achiever and he relates me to the scholarship boy. I couldn’t agree less because the scholarship boy is someone who is “addicted” to learning and confines himself from the outside universe. I feel I am just a normal student who might spend his time in confinement. I spend my time studying and preparing for the next test or topic in school. I do spend a good amount of time doing these things but I also have a life outside of education. I do spend time with friends and family and have fun besides education. I am not dedicated like the scholarship boy but I do take education seriously. In a weird way we are both right. The Scholarship Boy is a symbol of dedication and commitment to schooling. According to Hoggart, he has to be more and more alone, if he is going to “get on”. He is acknowledging that the scholarship boy is someone who needs to be alone to get his schooling done. He is someone who needs to fight against the feelings of his heart. He finds being alone more peaceful; He can get his homework and studies done in an environment like this compared to those of the average family. While most family’s center the living room as a place to study or someone for comfort. He uses his own space because he can’t work in the conditions he is given. He defines this place as an isolated and cold place to work. He tries the living room but finds himself being distracted and interrupted by family. He tries his room during the summer but feels he doesn’t belong and can’t get his studies while in his room. So to get his studies done he needs to mentally cut himself off from the family but knows a part of him wants to continue living his family oriented life.
