If You Don’t Mind, It Don’t Matter
I selected Mickey Rourke as the subject of my psychoanalysis. Initially, I chose Rourke because I thought his rugged face must hold a story. After consideration I also found an abundance of researchable material about his life. This would make my project more credible, and make my job easier.

I was attracted to Mickey Rourke because has played roles in a few of the movies I have watched, recently. While watching these movies I have always wondered what happened to his face. He didn’t look the same as the actor I had seen in the 80’s, and I wanted to know why. I also wondered what had brought on the recent comeback. Could it be attributed to the change in his appearance or had something else changed in his life? I did not have the answers for these questions so I went and found them. Biographical case study:

Mickey Rourke was born to his bodybuilder father Philip, and his mother Ann (Mickey Rourke, Why is he Famous?, 2012). He is a 59 year old, American male, who grew up in a tough Miami Florida neighborhood with his brother, Joey. He was raised Roman Catholic and still practices his faith (Biography for Mickey Rourke, 2012). Rourke is an actor, screenwriter, and retired boxer who primarily appears as a leading man in action, drama, and thriller films (Biography for Mickey Rourke, 2012). Mickey has received severe facial injuries, and more than one concussion, during his boxing career. He is extroverted and scales high in both the neuroticism and psychoticism scale (Dr. William Cameron, 2011). He also alleges his step brothers and step father show a tendency towards these traits. At age six, Rourke’s biological father abandoned him. Since then he has shown resentment towards his mother, for the situation she put him in when she married Eugene Addis, a Miami Beach police officer with five sons (Biography for Mickey Rourke, 2012). According to Rourke, his step family abused him on a daily basis. He has both suppressed and displaced his anger and, according to his stepfather, possibly projected his feelings onto others. Rourke’s step father denies abusing Mickey or his brother Joey (Jordan, 2008).

In his adolescence he seemed to find a release for his anger in the boxing ring. In adulthood he has used acting as way to express himself. By middle age Mickey was suicidal and recognized that he needed counseling, so he could find out what was triggering all the rage and learn how to keep people from pushing his buttons. Rourke has stated, “I had a lot of shame. I thought it was manlier to take that shame out in anger. So I took it out on everyone else.” (Jordan, 2008) When asked what kind of shame he answered “It began before my acting. When my mother divorced my father, she remarried a brutal man.” (Jordan, 2008) Mr. Rourke has presented with a Borderline Personality Disorder (Kristalyn Salters-Pedneault, 2009). This conclusion is based on the abnormal behaviors he has exhibited during his lifetime. He has profound feelings of abandonment, shame, and, immense anger. He has had two marriages, both of which ended in divorce due to his aggression. Although, Rourke considered starting a family with his second wife, he didn’t because he was terrified that the abuse he suffered as a child would have reappear and continued its vicious cycle (Rourke, Rourke's Fatherhood Fears, 2006). Rourke is a recovering addict, whose risky behaviors included drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, abusing drugs, and fighting (W., 2009). His emotional stability is low. He is aggressive and competitive, as illustrated by his career in boxing. He has also demonstrated a consciousness for rules by being moralistic and dutiful when he took it upon himself to be his younger brother Joey’s protector, both against his stepfather’s abuse and the neighborhood toughs (Jordan, 2008). This tendency, to do what is right,...
