Evaluation of Technology Impact on Higher Education
The important role played by ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in today’s world cannot be denied by anyone, whether it is in the corporate world, social, home and so on. Technology has changed the way on how universities teach and how the students learn. The advancement and pervasiveness of ICT in the 21st century and in the world today means that many nations have been relying on technology to handle and address many arising challenges faced in the education field. Some literature reviews were done in this paper where we would look into the needs of learners today, what and how they learn, how ICT could be used in learning, the new culture of learning through online learning and virtual classroom, how e-learning was accepted among the learners and what were the barriers to ICT implementation in higher education institutions. Peter and Hong (2011) pointed out that in the past few decades; there have been great changes in education, especially to those economical advanced countries. The arising issues of massification, internationalization, diversification and marketisation in higher education were brought about by political, economical and social changes as well as the globalization and global economic crisis. These issues had resulted in the increase in the number of students and demands for higher education, the number and type of higher education providers and concerns for its quality, transnational education both as importers and providers, the number of open and distance learning institutions, cross-border academic activities, students and its facilities, the use of entrepreneur and marketing approaches, enhancement of courses and programs, and the new contents, knowledge and skills. The increasing access to higher education has caused a diversification of student populations which comes from wide range of background with different learning styles and learning needs. The higher education institutions were asked to respond to the demand of globalization and the knowledge economy in order to prepare the students with 21st century skills and competencies for the labor markets which will require changes in the education curriculum and teaching practices. The demands were for increased efficiency, more transparent accountability and better performance for both research and teaching. Some identify the digital technology as one of the tools to help in managing and fulfilling these demands. Hence, many educators believed that closer cooperation and exchange of lessons learnt can benefit their respective higher education system. The changing needs of learners
Based on estimation, the global enrolment of higher education will increase to 125 million by 2020 (Laurilland, 2008). The huge increase in enrolment has resulted in a diversification of student populations. These students were coming from lower socio-economic backgrounds; they were also mature and part-time students. These mature, part-time and international learners have different expectations coming from their different traditional secondary school backgrounds. They may concern about what facilities and services were required to support their learning in higher education. They also demanded for more flexibility in the teaching and learning process as many of them would only be able to take courses in distance learning mode. These 21st century traditional school leavers had grown up with digital technologies and were surrounded by and immersed in technologies in their daily activities.
