Situated off coast mainland China, lies a sparkling island called Taiwan, it is located right below a tectonic plate which faces extreme weather, rainforest climate, and frequent Earthquakes. These features almost makes it impossible to build skyscrapers, yet lies one of the most outrageous achievements of Taiwan, creating a magnificent masterpiece of architecture and engineering – Taipei 101. It is also known as Taipei Financial Centre, consisting of a high rise tower with usable 101 floors above ground and 5 floors underground and rest on 30,277m2 land.[1] (Binder, G. pg 27) The whole commercial tower also consists of adjoined multi-level shopping complex with fashion outlet stores, restaurants and clubs. Taipei 101 is a traditional building concept which has been given modern construction techniques and methods to bring a unique structure to the world. Officially, Taipei was launched to public on 2004 with a grand opening ceremony of fireworks on the New Year’s Eve. It was considered the tallest tower in the world with height of 509.2 meters, until the recent skyscraper Burj Al-Khalifa in Dubai took over the tallest tower category with a breath-taking 828meters above the ground. Currently this firm provides consultation, architectural and interior design services in Asia and North of America. The firm’s most important factor is providing proper urban and architectural planning with soothing interior design which fits within the budget as well as construction process for projects of any size or scopes. The firm is also an award winning architectural firm specialized in residential, commercial, educational projects.2 (Kerns, A. pg 69)

C. Y. Lee is a Chinese architect based in Taiwan and was born in Guangdong, China. He studied his bachelor’s in Taiwan itself and Masters in United States. He has achieved many outstanding structures in Asia and also is the Architect for the evolving tall buildings in Taiwan. It was always a critical task for the Architects to create such a magnificent tower in an earthquake zone country. The architects purely used Chinese based architecture to symbolize it with Taiwan’s culture and tradition.

Concept

The Taipei 101 was purely based on Chinese architecture and the use of Pagoda to bring its exterior design. Pagoda is a general term for a tiered tower with multiple eaves which represents religious custom also believed to mean as “a place of worship.” There are 8 tiers which emerge from 25th floor and opens upwards as it rises, a form that signifies financial...
