Using tab stops allows the author of documents to line up script or figures so that they stop at exact locations within a document providing uniformity (Microsoft Word, 2013). Sometimes when placing information into a word document for analysis by readers, it is important to divide the information into columns so that the readers will clearly understand your intent. This is easily done by placing tab stops at the appropriate locations within the parallel ruler.

So, what are some instances when the use of tab stops is applicable and appropriate? The first instance where the usage of tabs stops is applicable is if you were preparing a paper on scientific numerical data. Using the decimal tab stop would allow you to evenly line columns of numerical data easily and efficiently via the decimal point (Microsoft Word, 2013). Next, tab stops could be used in the construction of an exercise program within a word document. For instance, in creating the exercise program it would be easy to separate the physical activity, from the repetitions expected in each exercise by using left and right tabs stops, with a leader tab between them.

For instance, if I was to add text for name, address, and date of birth I could use tab stops to retain areas for future input of requested information (Microsoft Word, 2013). In closing, I hope this brief essay allows you understand the practical uses of tabs stops as it applies to Microsoft
