Sunset at beach
I reached out and buried my hand into the sand and then sifted the handful of small worthless stones using the gaps between each finger. Left in the golden sandy palm of my hand laid a rather familiar object – Turkish delight. It was a smooth stone that was almost a perfect cube and of a delicate rosy colour. It glistened like dew-drops and under the light it exposed a subtle rainbow of colours within its translucent walls.

One morning, we decided to go out with some of the guests from the hostel for a hike along the hills by the seashore. These hills were covered in thick blades of grass but had rock faces that were pointed out towards the water. If you looked to your left you’d see these hills go for miles; mound after mound, circular shaped huts with cone shaped roofs sitting on top. African trees as well, looking as if the wind was blowing all the branches to one side of the trunk but they stood absolutely still; frozen in time. To your right you’d see the ocean go out for as far as you can see, while standing on a cliff with an almost vertical drop. From looking at the cliffs from the sides, it showed the many trails descending down the cliffs made by mountain goats and every once and a while you could see one half way down; climbing up. Although our surroundings were incredible, the heat was as well. We went through several bottles of water through-out the hike. Our leader, an African local, lead us down one of the more climbable hills to the ocean floor where it was covered in rock. With the sun beating down on us we felt trapped because we couldn’t swim in the water, the waves were too strong we’d be thrown up against the rocks.…

    Assyrian Relief Essay

While visiting the Los Angeles County Museum of Art I was struck by a piece by the title of Fragment of a Painted Assyrian Relief. This piece, made by the Akkadian culture during the Mesopotamia Era, is approximately 10 3/8 x 5. 1 ¾ inch in size. This fine, yet very ancient, work is crafted out of limestone. Fine, durable, brown stone and red pigment, it is especially found in Northern Iraq. Having a short written record, this relief sculpture once formed part of a much larger composition, and it depicts the head of an Assyrian sovereign, probably Sargon. In fact, the stone head of Sargon contains certain cultural elements that represent royalty and authority like the patterned beard and braided long hair. Although this sculpture is only mere fragment of the actual sculpture, the head of the Akkadian ruler presents the viewer with great meaning in elements, content, and cultural significance.…

The picture that I confronted was amazing to the point that I couldn't represent a moment. There were five major quiet greenish blue pounds that passed water to each other which then ran out as a waterfall. The sweet, almost wiped out, smell of blossoms slice through the delicate aroma of the evening's dewy grass developed all around the pounds. So high on the mountain I have a feeling that I can touch the sky with the tips of my fingers. I heard the winged creatures singing their wonderful last tune before they will go to rest. I solidify, thinking what an awesome day today is, when out of the blue I feel my stomach turn, I totally overlooked I didn't eat anything today. Tyler, Alex, and I sat down to eat some nourishment before we will head back. After every one of these hours not eating the sustenance felt particularly great. The pureed potatoes were smooth and velvety and the vegetables with their fluctuated hues gave the dish a pleasant appearance. The meat had a rich flavor with only a clue of spiciness. In the wake of eating we put lofts and laid there for around twenty minutes before we pressed up and left such a wonderful spot. I looked over the maritime blue pounds now, the blooms that were presently laying scattered on the grass like solidified blazes, the sky that had obscured to a weak violet shading, and the brilliant melon light of a late summer evening, pivoted and left. A winsome wind…

Looking out the front window, the ground was covered in powdery white snow, sparkling, like it had glitter in it. I took in the brilliant sight right in front of me, it was, for lack of a better description, magical. Even the road that had not yet been driven on was covered in a perfect blanket of snow, but something else caught my eye. From where I was standing, it looked like nothing more than a blob of color, but against the world of white in front of me, it initiated my curiosity.…

After several days and nights the desert began to become hotter and we lost track of time. As we were walking along under the stars in dark of the night I tripped over a rock and fell towards the ground with a splash. The cool liquid surrounded my dry skin as a feeling of joy spread throughout my body. “Water!” I shouted back to the others. Smiles spread across the group as they jumped into the pool of water. Everyone drank and ate berries from the surrounding bushes until we could eat no more. As we sat around a fire that James had created the conversation of how much more walking we could take came up.…

    The Road Essay

When he woke in the woods in the dark and the cold of the night he'd reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him. Nights dark beyond darkness and the days more gray each one than what had gone before. Like the onset of some cold glaucoma dimming away the world. His hand rose and fell softly with each precious breath. He pushed away the plastic tarpaulin and raised himself in the stinking robes and blankets and looked toward the east for any light but there was none. In the dream from which he'd wakened he had wandered in a cave where the child led him by the hand. Their light playing over the wet flowstone walls. Like pilgrims in a fable swallowed up and lost among the inward parts of some granitic beast. Deep stone flues where the water dripped and sang. Tolling in the silence the minutes of the earth and the hours and the days of it and the years without cease. Until they stood in a great stone room where lay a black and ancient lake. And on the far shore a creature that raised its dripping mouth from the rimstone pool and stared into the light with eyes dead white and sightless as the eggs of spiders. It swung its head low over the water as if to take the scent of what it could not see. Crouching there pale and naked and translucent, its alabaster bones cast up in shadow on the rocks behind it. Its bowels, its beating heart. The brain that pulsed in a dull glass bell. It swung its head from side to side and then gave out a low moan and turned and lurched away and loped soundlessly into the dark. With the first gray light he rose and left the boy sleeping and walked out to the road and squatted and studied the country to the south. Barren, silent, godless. He thought the month was October but he wasn't sure. He hadnt kept a calendar for years. They were moving south. There'd be no surviving another winter here. When it was light enough to use the binoculars he glassed the valley…

AR out in the ocean, where the water is as blue as the prettiest cornflower, and as clear as crystal, it is very, very deep; so deep, indeed, that no cable could fathom it: many church steeples, piled one upon another, would not reach from the ground beneath to the surface of the water above. There dwell the Sea King and his subjects. We must not imagine that there is nothing at the bottom of the sea but bare yellow sand. No, indeed; the most singular flowers and plants grow there; the leaves and stems of which are so pliant, that the slightest agitation of the water causes them to stir as if they had life. Fishes, both large and small, glide between the branches, as birds fly among the trees here upon land. In the deepest spot of all, stands the castle of the Sea King. Its walls are built of coral, and the long, gothic windows are of the clearest amber. The roof is formed of shells, that open and close as the water flows over them. Their appearance is very beautiful, for in each lies a glittering pearl, which would be fit for the diadem of a queen.…

A rainbow is prolonged across the land. It has the brightest colors of blue, yellow, pink, and orange. It is so beautiful; the majestic colors make one want to reach out and touch it. A huge waterfall sets at the edge of New Jerusalem. The water is so clear one could see a speck of dust traveling down to the bottom.
