Pocahontas, a well known figure in history, was the main topic of John Smith’s letter to Queen Anne of Great Britain in 1616. John Smith was incredibly fond of her and believed that she should be welcomed and respected in England. John Smith speaks highly of Pocahontas, as well as Queen Anne in this letter. John has had many encounters (both good and bad) with Pocahontas, and he mentions these instances in a positive and respectful way. John Smith creates emphasis and uses different techniques to convey his message to Queen Anne. He uses hyperboles as well as personification to enhance his main idea. While this letter is meant to be about Pocahontas, he also speaks about Queen Anne herself in order to help persuade her.…

Today, the promotion of democracy as a form of freedom blares through the mainstream media. However, the American system of government is not a democracy it is a constitutional republic. In ancient Athens, the majority put Socrates to death for the simple reason; they did not like what he was saying. Your article “You Have the Right to Remain a Target of Racial Profiling,” was rather entertaining and not based on all factual evidence. I do not solely base my opinions on statistical data from one source. You quoted percentages from the Federal Bureau of Justice Statistics report which stated that Hispanics, African Americans and Whites were most likely to be pulled over for a traffic offense. Percentages can be alarming when used in this context, and I agree that this would be a very persuasive argument for racial biases.…

William Sherman was an American soldier, businessman, educator and author. Sherman served as a General in the Union during the civil war. In 1864, General Sherman went ahead to lead his troops to the city of Atlanta. In all he received recognition for his military. Mrs. Thomas Burge wrote a journal called “A Women’s Wartime Journal.” In her recording you see that the Yankees constantly came to their town taking what was not their own such as food and money. In Georgia’s springtime, she described the air as a “tonic vapor,” which was taken from the earth from pine trees, tulip trees, and more.…

Recently, some disturbing information was brought to my attention about one of Lyman Highschool's staff members. While in one of the restrooms I oveheard a convorsation about one of the theachers here at Lyman: Mrs. Neris. The other students were talking about a transgender student (who I personally do not know) and one of the mentioned that Mrs. Neris had given that student a referal for using the boy's restroom. (the student is originally female.) I was absolutely shocked, disgusted, and appalled. I felt so bad for that student. I can't imagine how embarassing and belittling that could feel. I know that a main goal of lyman higschool is to create a safe and comfortable learning environment where students can feel accepted…

It saddened me to hear that a few months ago a bill to assist veterans in finding jobs, in which their military skills would be utilized, was voted down in Senate. Sponsored by Senator Patty Murray, "Veterans Jobs Corps Act of 2012", was thought to be a sure pass. The vote was 58-40; only 2 more votes were needed to pass this bill. This bill was effectively killed on the Senate floor by the Republican party on September, 19, 2012. The "Veterans Jobs Corps Act of 2012" was meant to tackle feelings of uselessness by giving our overqualified heroes an opportunity to work in fields appropriate to their abilities (For example police, firemen, armed security, etc.).…

It was about seven in the evening and I got a call from my friend, letting me know she and her grandmother had made it home. Her grandmother is in her 60’s, so there wasn’t much texting going between us. I’d been trying to catch up with her all day to interview her, but I guess she had a very busy weekend. I finally arrived to the house just ready to get the interview over with.…
