Suffering and Senator Reyes
Tranquilino “Gagamba” Penoy Physical Evil Gagamba was born with deformity. His body appears to be like a spider – the reason why people tend to call him ‘gagamba’ (the spider man). He doesn’t have any legs but he has two arms that are of great importance. Despite of the abnormalities, gagamba was not weak to cope with life’s everyday challenge. He is brave. Nevertheless, he was very clever. He had learned to live by himself. Selling sweepstake’s tickets in front of Camarin suffice his needs. Being a watch-your-car boy is also not an easy thing to do from his condition. This led him to be excellent in memorizing faces, dates and events. Every people that comes in and out of the Camarin left on his mind. He witnessed whatever comes with them every inch of the way. His existence proved how people can surpass whatever challenges that come along the way. It is not what you are or who you are but it is what you do. “Gagamba did not want to be called a beggar – he never stretched out an arm, never asked customers for any more than the price of the ticket. But if someone handed him an extra ten-peso bill, or even something smaller, he accepted it graciously, intoning with solemnity, ‘May God give you luck and good health’”. He is very independent. He doesn’t use his deformities for people to feel pity for him. But one thing is in more great importance. He believes in God behind those hardships and sufferings.
