Studying Literature in Grade 12 (Edited)
Hopefully by the end of this essay, you will agree that graduating students in Ontario should only study Canadian literature in a Grade Twelve English course. While good writers exist in all cultures, Ontario students should only study Canadian writers, because we need to become more familiar with our country’s literature. Three reasons for this are: the need to focus on our own Canadian culture despite being surrounded by other cultures, the need to promote and establish our own local writers, and the need to encourage younger Canadian authors by providing them with Canadian role models.
Students in Ontario taking English should only study Canadian literature because we are completely submerged in the American culture around us. This is a Canadian tradition because we have always been a “branch plant” of another country starting with England and France, meaning that our own culture has never had the chance to develop since we have always been “under the thumb” of a more powerful foreign culture. This is why, for years, a student in Ontario would study Shakespeare and other British writers; today they may also study American authors such as Fitzgerald. However, many schools limit a student’s exposure to Canadian novels to ISP reading lists. In this sense, Canada is an attic in which we have stored American and British literature without considering our own (Davies, Letters in Canada 426). No wonder a Canadian student has problems appreciating their culture.
Often what Canadian literature is studied is very old. This includes works such as Mordecai’s Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz or Lawrences Stone Angel. Fifth Business, which was published in 1970 – fourty-five years ago -- is still on many courses of study in Gr. 12 classrooms. Atwood’s Handmade’s Tale the most recent of these books was published in 1985; over twenty years ago. Again, while most teachers

    The book I read was Huckleberry Finn, which was written by Samuel Langhorne Clemens whom is also known as Mark Twain. Twain was born on "November 30, 1835, in Florida or Missouri, his exact birthplace is not known" (Powers, 11). He was born to "John and Jane Clemens" (Powers, 11). At the age of only "twelve years old Twain worked as a printer 's apprentice and typesetter in Hannibal" (Powers, 11). It was "at this age that Twain became interested in writing and as he got older he got more serious into his career" (Powers, 11). By the time he died he had received many awards and honors which include "Honorary M.A., 1888, Litt.D., 1901, both Yale University; LL.D., University of Missouri, 1902; named to American Academy of Arts and Letters, 1904; D.Litt., Oxford University, 1907" (Powers, 26). Mark Twain wrote many other "Novels, Humor/Satire, Short Stories, Plays, Essays, and Letters" (Wagenknecht, 31), therefore, making him more than qualified to write this book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is considered one of his greatest works. It is so good that "Ernest Hemingway said it "was one of the great masterpieces of the world" (Wagenknecht, 34). The purpose for Huck Finn was to express ideas in the late 1800 's, which was dominantly slavery.     Canada is known around the world as a strong and independent country with a unique identity. The belief in hard work and sacrifice has enabled Canadians to survive through the hostile environment and gave the birth to Canadian identity. The struggle and sacrifices were so great that Canada has been referred as the “Great Dominion” by the poets and writers.     Abstract Despite a sharp gap historically segregating Hafez and Goethe from each other, the researcher justifiably finds them to merit sharing common spiritual, social, cultural and literary characteristics. This advocacy mainly stems from the fact that the former (Hafez) exercised an unfathomable strand of multidimensional impact on the latter (Goethe). Admittedly, based on findings approached in this study, the occidental Europe, at the time of Goethe, bitterly suffered from the absence of a remedial philosophy to make up for the ethical disadvantages befell upon the Europeans then. The researcher accordingly asserts that Goethe intelligently took Hafez’s oriental and Islamic tenets and values and had them frankly and furtively included in his mystical and transcendental expectations in poetry.
