Dazzling colors, fun displays, and lots of smiles. I have loved watching parades since I was old enough to remember. My favorite part of the Big Sandy and Yamboree parades was always seeing Miss Big Sandy. Even though her face has changed throughout the years, the symbol of Big Sandy remains the same. When I was 6, I was too infatuated with the pretty clothes and sparkling floats to ever truly think about what Miss Big Sandy represents. As I got older, and talked with the other young ladies that have been chosen, I realized that Miss Big Sandy represents our entire town. I learned that Miss Big Sandy isn’t simply parades and fancy dresses; Miss Big Sandy is a symbol of service for those who need it, and she stands for helping others. She volunteers,…

Dave Chappelle's comedy has made numerous aspects of American race relations and racial stereotypes subject to ridicule in a manner that has both united and divided. On one hand, his name became synonymous with comedy for the younger generations; on the other, his values caused him to question his own comedy, leading him to effectively terminate his career. “In the Wake of 'The Nigger Pixie': Dave Chappelle and the Politics of Crossover Comedy” by Bambi Haggins demonstrates that Chappelle's comedic style is the result of numerous elements of comedy in the African American community coming together and that it came about as a result of his experiences. It gives and expands upon the reasons that Chappelle left Chappelle's Show and presents them in an optimal setting. Chappelle's roots are established as guiding him through his comedic career, his desire to share his comedy with the masses without accommodating the tastes of the networks or what they would think would be “palatable” to their audiences. Haggins' analysis of Chappelle's comedic style for the duration of Chappelle's Show explains how Chappelle was able to blend older styles of African American comedy into his unique comedic style by using his sketches to support her claims. Haggins knows how to blend this mixture artfully into an essay piquing the interest of others on the topic of Chappelle's career and comedic style.…

The 16th episode of season 29 of Saturday Night Live welcomed the presidential hopeful Donald Trump to host the show. The sold-out performance received copious amounts of criticism from a variety of pro-immigrant, hispanic and other minority organizations. Despite the speculation, the show went on, and Trump was warmly welcomed onto the SNL stage. Despite their host, the show did not hold off in making fun of the guest. Saturday Night Live was adequately funny and witty as usual, though I do not believe that the host contributed to their success.…

David Shields in his work Life Story manages to prove that the collectivness of the society in one individual, especially in literature, is possible. Shields creates an image of a person living through all of the stages of life, birth, brief view on childhood, exstensive description of shool times and adult life, and finally death. It seems like the cliché has taken all what was good and positive in life, and replaced it with materialism, crisis and egocentrism. The portrait that Shields creates is widely negative, he mocks the contemporary society because of it's flaws and the addition to material things. Philip Lopate in his foreword was right, claiming that the mass media influences people's thoughts. The common tendency is to let it overtake…
