Sony - Future Tense?
Sony, the Japan-based multinational conglomerate, is one of the leading manufacturers of consumer electronics devices and information technology products. Sony was responsible for introducing path breaking products like the Walkman, the Discman, and the PlayStation gaming console, among others. But in the late 1990s, it lost its leadership position in many product lines in which it was operating. Analysts attributed this to the silo culture prevailing in the organization. Each of the departments functioned like different fiefdoms, hardly cooperating with each other, even when it was necessary. Moreover, Sony's growing complacency led to its failing to recognize the growing popularity of new technologies and digital products and the company choosing to stick to its proprietary formats.

Sony was caught off-guard and tried to revive itself under the guidance of its first non-Japanese head Howard Stringer, who took over as the CEO in 2005.

For a couple of years, Sony appeared to be on the path to revival. However, for the fiscal year ending March 2009, the company reported a loss. Sony's failure to bring out innovative products in spite of having the required competencies was one of the main reasons for the company's problems, and analysts attributed it to the existing culture in the company. In February 2009, with the aim of addressing the issue of its silo culture, Stringer announced a reorganization that involved changes in the organization structure. Through this reorganization, he sought to transform Sony into an innovative and agile company. However, it remains to be seen whether the reorganization can bring Sony out of its problems.

Sony is a well respected brand in the electronic industry. With its success entering the gaming market with its PlayStation, Sony has earned a position as a market leader. Problems began to occur when Sony launched its seventh generation gaming console. New competitors entered the market, such as Microsoft and old rivals such as Nintendo. The release of the Sony PlayStation 3 failed to achieve growth in sales due to the lack of direct and indirect network effects. One of the reason majority of the users were not adopting because of the high price premium and the technological uncertainty. Technological uncertainty included the new innovation Blu-ray and the number of main stream users willing to buy the console. The SCENT analysis displayed a strong network effect for the Sony PS2 because it was: a more advanced product, had agreements with third party game developers, and had a strong advertising campaign. Unfortunately, this was not the case for PS3. There was a strong network effect for the PS3 when its Blu-ray became the de facto standard in 2008. PS3 also showed signs of increase sale when it dropped the price of its console yet they were still losing money on each console being sold. The recommended course of action that Sony should take is composed of 3 main components: alteration to the promotional program, a shift in the marketing strategy, and the addition of demos in select locations.…

"There's a real possibility they could take the top share for the year." Sony's push in India is part of a larger move by Japanese companies including Toshiba Corp., who are following South Korean rivals in expanding into emerging markets. Sony’s fate through the 1990s has been characterised by grave vagaries of events in its fifty years of operation. Enormous successes from 1946 has been attributed to the collaborative venture between Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita whom due to health issues had to retire from the scene for another generation of management. Diversification into the US saw Sony’s biggest demise in the year 1995 to the tune of US$3.3 Billion. Sony’s conglomerate incorporation of multimedia facilities into its stream of entertainment business is till date yielding sizable profits from the bumper shares of the new economy E business. Currently, the company’s innovative foresight into the future of digital electronics is peaked by fierce competition from US consumer electronic magnate Apple and South Korea’s Samsung Electronics on the international front hence Sony needs to revamp its strategic positioning and restructuring activities to cut cost drastically as an attempt to sustain profits in the face of an economic turmoil judged by a US$10 Billion loss within 8 years of operation till date with a further US$6.4 Billion loss recorded for March 2012 and announced in May 2012. This analysis seeks to evaluate Sony’s various strategies with a SWOT analysis and consider Sony’s Annual Reports and Accounts Statistics from the year 1989 to 2009. Strategic recommendations for the ailing company will also be asserted at the end of the analysis…
