Background of Study
This study focuses on improving the network of the company. Our study observes how we could address the problem of the company in connecting all computers of the business for easy access of information and the accessing of data from the store’s computers from the owner’s homes. This study will help in creating a better system for the company. This study will help us to experience how to handle such problem and create a solution for future companies.
Gilmore Wines and Spirits, was founded by Mr. Magnus Villafuerte and Mr. Marcus Morales. The business started about 3 years ago in the same lot that is seen today. The lot that their store now stands started as a show room. They were previously only selling wines, and through a program in De La Salle University, they got their funds to expand the business. Now they expanded to selling a wide variety of beer. After the weeks that followed the opening of the store, income was low, for it was difficult getting customers. Mr. Villafuerte explained that not many people knew it was a liquor store nor it was an open business, only friends who knew were their only customers.
Objective of the Company
Their objective is to expand and to be a known business to be able to achieve their goal in giving the Philippines a taste of the best beers in the world.
It is their goal to deliver a wide diversity of beer to the Philippines for they believe the local market has been ruled by San Miguel which creates a very limited variety of beer.
It is their inspiration for beer that is driving them to push on and share their knowledge of unique beers from around the world.
Company organizational chart
The two heads, Mr. Villafuerte and Mr. Morales, has 6 employees. The employees have no specific position for the heads believe in equalization of responsibilities between all employees. Each employee is authorized to do any job that is available for them, may it be as a cashier or updating the records of the inventory.
REVIEW OF THE CURRENT INFRASTRUCTURE
According to the two owners of the business, they have no network. They have 3 computers. Only 1 computer is connected to the internet. The 3 computers are not connected to each other whatsoever. They do have internet connection, which is a home connection that uses Dynamic IP address. Assessing the current situation of the business, it is a must for them to have even a basic network that connects all the data to all computers for easy access and back up of important files. There is plenty room for application and development of a network. The details will serve as our basis on what we can offer.
The whole business will benefit from having no network, to having a network. This is a small investment to upgrade their systems which in turn will create much more output than they are currently creating. The data from the main business computer can be easily accessed by the two owners in their personal laptops in their homes. Since they will be able to access the data from their homes, the connection must be secure and there must be authorizations. This is only a small barrier and the positive outcome outweighs this problem.
The business needs a network that will connect all computers in the store, and to connect the owners to the store’s computers. The data in their databases must be accessed by all computers including those in the owner’s homes. There must be a secure connection and authorization when accessing this information. Although, regarding the authorization, all the employees and not just the owners are authorized to access this information.
