Similarities Between 9/11 And Pearl Harbor
Date of Infamy

This paper will discuss similarities between 9/11 and Pearl Harbor and describe/evaluate/analyze

the Presidential responses to the attacks, as well as examine/investigate the roles that class,

culture, religion, and notions of superiority played in these attacks on the United States.

Before comparing the two events there has to be an understanding of what happened at

each event. On the 9th of September 2001, people were ready to go to work like any other normal

day. Sadly, they did not know what tragedy laid ahead of them in a matter of just hours. Some

went to the Twin Towers in New York, which are the signature buildings of the World Trade

Center and others went to Arlington, Virginia to work in the US Pentagon

will have for the following three years and eight months and the first wave of

Japanese planed reached Pearl Harbor and started to bomb everything. Some even drove their

planes straight into our fleets of ships. Many lost their lives and a loved ones. The following will

explain how similar these two attacks are and their impact on the U.S. and also pointing out

differences in the presidential speeches.

The attacks of 9/11 compare to those of Pearl Harbor in 1941 because they were both

unprovoked and both took place on U.S. soil. In both the attacks the U.S. failed to listen to the

intelligence they had, the U.S. had information that the Japanese were planning something but

they didn’t act on it. Same thing for 9/11 they had a whole summer and they knew that

something was going to happen but they chose to ignore it because many people were on

vacation to put together a meeting and discuss a plan of action. Another similarity was that

people were extremely scared of follow up attacks. After the attacks on Pearl Harbor people in

California feared an attack on the West Coast could happen. After 9/11 airspace was closed in

fear of another airplane attack. Although, a huge difference was that the Pearl Harbor attack

Due the culture and religion of the 9/11 hijackers they

were led to believe that Americans were the worst of “infidels” and that Americans were “at war

with God.” Osama Bin Laden brainwashed people and said, “We believe that the worst thieves in

the world today and the worst terrorists are the Americans. Nothing could stop you except

perhaps retaliation in kind. We do not have to differentiate between military or civilian. As far as

we are concerned, they are all targets.” Extremists believed this and decided to attack America.

Those of the extremist Islamic and Muslim faith think they are superior to “American infidels.”

Which made them think it was okay to kill civilians and do other evil things. Japan must have

attacked the U.S. because of two things: 1. they thought they were superior because they had

been conquering recently and had a treaty with the Soviets so they weren’t so scared of the U.S.

or England. 2. The U.S. had placed an embargo on Japan essential goods because they had taken

over northern French Indochina.

The attack on Pearl Harbor and the attack on 9/11 share similarities and differences. 75 years ago on December 7th, 1941, a surprise attack by the Japanese hit Pearl Harbor in Hawaii(Rosenburg 1). 50 years later, on September 11th 2001, an attack by Al-Qaeda hit New York City(Jensen 1). These two acts were very similar in their effect on the country, their number of casualties and warning signs, but had different perpetrators and rescue efforts.…

Unfortunately, the World War II broke out, in which Japan and the U.S fought in two opposing sides. More or less, the big political conflict led to the Japanese attack towards the U.S military base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This incident launched a cold fury inside the U.S. The fear that most people had at that time was understandable and reasonable. Japanese was famous for their loyalty and patriot. It was possible that they might be…

Despite their many differences, the two events are quite similar. Both the Revolutionary War and 9/11 caused fear and sadness in America. After 9/11, people were afraid of flying airplanes, leaving their homes, and some even grew paranoid of all Muslims. During the Revolutionary War, there was fear of both British and Native American terrorism. Another similarity is that both resulted in thousands of people dead or wounded. There were approximately 25,000 wounded, and another 25,000 people found dead during the Revolutionary War. In 9/11, 6,291 people were wounded, while 2,998 died. One similarity that is still very strong today is that both drastically divided the nation. During the Revolutionary War, the people were turned…

Pearl Harbor was attacked December 7, 1941 by the Japanese Empire. It was a surprise attack that shocked Americans into disbelief and sadness. Parts of the world were already involved in World War II, but America wanted to stay neutral and out of the war. President Franklin Roosevelt, the following night, spoke to the American people. Right off the bat he stated, "Yesterday, December 7, 1941-a date which will live in infamy"(Roosevelt 449). From this line the American people realized that we as a nation would not take this standing down and in fact that we were heading for war. On Tuesday September 11, 2001, New York City and Washington D.C. were attacked by terrorists from an unknown organization. Once again the surprise attacks shocked Americans into disbelief and sadness. At this time the world was in a relative state of peace. The untested President George W. Bush made his speech to the American people that same night. In President Bush's speech he mentions, "None of us will ever forget this day, yet we go forward to defend freedom and all that is good and just in our world." Remembering this day also and defending our freedom through war.…

The September 11 attacks, also known as 9/11, were the most horrific events on American soil. 9/11 was the beginning of the age of terrorism and America’s fight against it. On September 11, 2001, Islamic extremists known as al-Qaeda, hijacked four planes and caused great damage. Two planes hit the World Trade Center, one hit the Pentagon, and the fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania. American Airlines Boeing 767 which carried 20,000 gallons of fuel hit the World Trade Center in New York City at 8:45 am. It hit the 80th floor and killed thousands of people. The tower collapsed to the ground around 10:30 am. At first, television newscasters believed it was a deadly accident until 18 minutes later. United Airlines Flight 175 Second Boeing 767 hit the South Tower,…

Another thing that these tragedies differ in is the era they occurred in. The Revolutionary war occurred in 1775. In 1775 the technology was not nearly as advance as it was the so when the war started not many people new about it, it could have been weeks before some people knew the war had started. The technology that was created by 9/11/2011 was much more advance than that of 1775 which means the news of 9/11 occurred more rapid than that…

There are many similarities and differences between the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. One attack was committed by terrorists and the other was committed by a government. After Pearl Harbor, we entered a world war, and after the terrorist attacks, we invaded another country. Shining brilliantly in the clear blue sky above America’s east coast, the sun promised a good travel day. The summer of 2001 was nearing its end as thousands of lower Manhattan office workers followed their usual morning routine. Many worked in the skyline-defining twin towers of the World Trade Center. In Washington, meanwhile, employees of the Department of Defense were at their desks in a section of the Pentagon. On this September 11 morning, four planes were scheduled to leave American airports within twelve minutes of each other. Aboard each of those planes were terrorists who were part of a coordinated plan to kill innocent people. Had the weather b8een bad, or the flights delayed for some other reason, the terrorists’ planned actions may not have occurred as they did. But this is not the story of what might-have-been. It is the story of the worst attack on U.S. soil since the bombing of Pearl Harbor.…

On September 11, 2001 America woke up expecting a normal day. What America did not expect was that this day was going to change history forever. On that day Islamic extremist high-jacked four U.S. airplanes with the intent of crashing them into the twin towers, the Pentagon and the White House. Two of the planes did indeed crash into the twin towers in New York City and another was used to hit the pentagon. The passengers on the last plane however, fought back, and it was landed before it could be used to hit the white house. “A decade later, what happened on Sept. 11 still resonates for much of the country. Even more Americans now say the horror of that day changed their lives.”1 These were the first attacks ever directed toward U.S. civilian population. These organized attacks lead to the need for an immediate change in the way the United States approached defending itself.…

“There were terrorist activities even before the 9/11 terrorist attack on America. But the form of terrorism was different from the form of terrorism prevalent now-a-days. Before 9/11, America was known as the spectator of so said Islamic terrorism or at some places it was known that it worked as a helper to organize it. But the event of 9/11 forced America to think that even America can fall victim to own pet snake. So on this day, American President Bush declared to start a worldwide 'war against terrorism '. After the event of 9/11, America took a vow to uproot the tree of terrorism from the world. Most of the Muslim countries of the world strongly oppose the thought of strong religionist terrorism & call it anti-Islamic. These Muslim countries openly favored America against terrorism after 9/11. Even the terrorists accused the…
