Should Students Be Allowed To Study Hall Research Paper
Irons Junior High is full of students with potential, but most students are too busy with out of school activities to reach theirs. We have the opportunity to make Irons the best, so why don’t we take that chance? Students are failing core classes and not completing their work, but with this great addition, there would be more honor students, higher grades, and a better learning environment. Study hall should be available to students because they can have a quiet place to study and focus, they will have resources they can't get outside of school, and students will have more time to complete homework.

First of all, students should be allowed to have a study hall because they will have more time to complete homework. According to Mona Wang, Jenna Troccoli, and Sophie Lyle, a majority of the 17 million high school and junior high students would agree that they want to relax in the afternoon and not spend the day finishing an assignment due the next day. Sure many students have phones and can look up the answers to basically anything. But, homework is not something the phones don’t know how to do. Study hall will give student’s information they need to make a better grade on assignments. Also, if a student has a question, then they can look in a textbook gives them more information about the topic and gives better grades.

Even though study hall is a great thing that would benefit Irons, people have doubts about it. But, research shows that twice as much homework was completed when students had access to a study hall. The same study found the students understanding of the topic was

A common phrase among young adults in secondary education is that there are three parts to high school life: social life, grades, and sleep. Pick two. Clifton Parker, on a study by education scholar Denise Pope, states “spending too much time on homework mean[s] students [are] ‘not meeting their developmental needs or cultivating other critical life skills,’” Students [are] more likely to drop activities, not see friends or family, and not pursue hobbies they enjoy.” To achieve grades that fulfill collegiate ambitions, students must spend all of the time they may spend with family or friends on the homework that earns them points. Teachers often assume that a student’s overall productivity is defined by the amount of work completed in a night. Many end up assigning at least an hour of homework to assure themselves that the kids are learning. Real life productivity is defined by advancement and development of character or leadership. Through that lens, completing busywork is not productive. Once students reach the real world, they are underprepared and underdeveloped to face day to day challenges. In an interview, Christine Gross-Loh quotes Krista Kuru, Finnish Education Chief, describing the reasoning against this approach. She states “Academics isn't all kids need. Kids need so much more. School should be where we teach the meaning of life; where kids learn they are needed; where they can learn community skills.…

Some people say that homework is helpful for subject enhancement in students, however others may say homework is not very helpful and instead is a stressor for students. As a result, there is much debate on the topic of homework. Here at Culver City Middle School, there isn’t a homework policy, which leads to either too little homework or too much homework. This is a real problem since students are trying to advance and understand subjects. A new policy, should be created where there is need for meaningful homework as it will benefit many students in several ways.…

Lowering the stress of students will increase higher productivity, raise grade averages, and open opportunities to teach valuable life lessons. Study hall should not be a mandatory for all students because it does not benefit all students equally, but should be offered for those who need it and will use it properly. Not only will it benefit the students directly, it will also benefit the school and the entire community by opening opportunities to students. Giving students one hour of study hall, once a day or a few times a week, is a necessity and contributes highly to their…

High school is stressful as it is and when we don’t get to sleep well at night it’s even more stressful. Then wake up early the next day it’s hard for someone to focus completely. Having hours of homework, doing chores, and just spending time with family after school can’t be done .When you have to go to bed early and wake up at six o’clock the next day. If students would be able to get at least one more hour of sleep it would decrease many health issues, attendances issues ,accidents and maybe even help in a way that it could increase students grades.…

Since OT has worked it’s way into our school, many have been asking: “Should we replace OT with a study hall?” This repeats what many are thinking about OT, and whether it should be replaced. OT should be switched out with a study hall to provide students with a better opportunity to learn, study, and get homework done. It would allow students extra homework time. Students could study for tests or quizzes. An opportunity to get extra help from teachers would also be available. Students could begin to enjoy reading by reading on their own without being forced to.…

When you think of a classroom, especially now being in college, we think of a large student to teacher ratio. It is hard for a teacher to focus all their attention and energy into the needs of one student because of the sizes of classes. That is why in magnet programs the student to teacher ratio is cut down drastically. This gives teachers the ability to concentrate on the needs of the students individually which can lead to an increase in grade point averages which are beneficial when applying to colleges. Also, with a smaller class size the teacher is able to move more swiftly through the course material because there is a smaller chance of confusion and misunderstanding and there is a greater chance that the students are moving at the same pace.…

Parents of high schoolers say that a later start time would mess with their work schedules; complaining that they would then not be able to leave for work for another hour. High schoolers range from fourteen to eighteen years old, and therefore should be able to stay home an hour without their parents. Coaches and leaders of groups say that it affects extracurricular activities. Even though there would have to be changes to extracurricular activities times, nothing should come before student health, and well being. When a student is sleep deprived they do not perform nearly close to their full potential, and thus not even satisfying their after school…

87 percent of high school teens are not getting the sleep that is recommended for a healthy lifestyle. Because school starts at an early time the time for sleep is compressed to a point where their minds and bodies are not ready to be awake ( Richter, Ruthann). Due to having a cell phones teens are staying up later after doing homework to check their social media account, talk to family members, and to catch up on the new they missed out on in school With the academic stress that is put on to teenagers in this day and age many come home from various practices and jobs just to do four to five hours of homework from advanced classes or even extra work from level classes. School should reduce the amount of homework given every night and have time in each class dedicated to working on homework or schools should have more time in the school dedicated to…

Those people usually stay up late to finish their homework and to study for the tests. According to Sylviane Duval, a professor at the Health Behavior News Center, “only about 8 percent of high school students get enough sleep on an average school night.” One of the anonymous students leaves the comment under the article: “I sleep mostly at 2a.m. because I’m always up late doing a ton load of homework to get straight As. Some of my friends just copy other’s homework and cheat on the tests, ironically, they get As also.” Cheating makes you gain unfair advantages over the persevering students who sacrifice their sleeping time in exchange of the good grades. It is unjust for the entire school community if the grades cannot reflect one’s ability…
