SHC 32: Engage in personal development in health, social care or children and young people’s settings

1.1, 1.2, 3.1

Within my job descriptions all aspects relate to relevant standards as set out by The National Occupational standards for teaching assistants. I aassist teaching staff in the delivery of learning activities and work programs and undertake predetermined activates with pupils so that their intellectual and social development (including self-reliance and self-esteem) is fostered. I do this in accordance with school polices and statutory requirements. I feel do this effectively but would like to develop my own literacy and numeracy skills so I can become more confident with the delivery of input.

I feel I do this very well fairly, I have had staff training in team teach (an approach used to diffuse situations and prevent escalation). I feel I am good at thinking on my feet when responding directly to pupils needs.
I have worked hard to build a good relationship with my 1:1 child and Interact with the pupil in a manner that’s appropriate to the pupil’s communication and interaction skills which has enabled me to pre-empt behavioral issues, such as child preferring to sit on a particular chair within the classroom or when lining up the preference to be first in line. I am able to approach staff and inform them if I am having difficulty with a pupil

I take direction from teaching staff when setting up the learning environment and ensure that all equipment needed for activities is available and maintained. I would also check the condition of learning resources and materials after use. I am vigilant that the classroom is kept clean and tidy and encourages pupils to return materials to the appropriate place after use and to dispose of waste in a safe and tidy manner.
