Shadowing Clinic Reflection
The shadowing clinic was a good experience, I learned a few good pointers on what to do and what not to do. At the beginning when I arrived at the clinic, it was very stressful. I was going back and forth on each side of the clinic to find my group number and when I asked a few students and instructors, they didn’t know where the groups where placed themselves. It was very frustrating but I found my group in the end. In the group I stayed with one DH2. The first DH2 I stayed with, she showed me how she sort out her stuff in her area, what she had to write in the ROA. Later she showed me how she picks up her client at the WAVE clinic and how to interact with them.

At the clinic I helped her with suctioning. She debrided her clients teeth and

Definitely, my most memorable shadowing experience. Although the 12-hour shift was at night, the ongoings on the Trauma Center keeps everyone on their toes. Nurses, radiologists, surgeons, even policemen all worked together on various cases. The most severe of the night was of a young man whose femur broke in half after being knocked by a vehicle while running away with a stolen bike. Having being present while the orthopedist straightened his leg with only local anesthesia was definitely an impressive moment. My first gunshot wound was seen and I observed a surgery where a large pus-filled abscess had to be cleaned from a diabetic patient. The dreaded fear of burnt flesh was…

Sounds pretty similar to the agency I work for but it sounds like you had a lot more training then we did. Oddly, I was never asked or told to shadow anyone however, I did have a few nurses shadow me. I asked these nurses about it and they told me they weren’t getting paid for their time and I thought that was a little bizarre. I’m guessing that many agencies do not pay people for training after hearing your experience was similar to…

One air inhalation hazard I observed during the Mirror Lab tour was for rhodite 906. In a large open room and workspace, the mirror lab utilized rhodite frequently to polish large new mirrors. This is concerning because this is a hazardous dust particle with its particle size at about 1.5 micrometers. The movement of these particles are heighted by water mist placed above the mirror to keep the rhodite from solidifying. The employees also sprayed down the mirror frequently which further caused these particles to move around. When we were walking beneath and to the side of the mirror, orange rhodite compound could be seen on the sides of the mirror as well as the ground. The employer’s job was to make sure the mirror was properly and consistently being polished.…

Although I wanted to hear that I had been accepted to the program, I was also prepared to be rejected. However, I had not imagined the possibility of being waitlisted once more. In 2015, I applied to MED while I was still in college hoping to spend a summer learning about the dedication required to succeed in medical school. I was waitlisted and the spot for me was never created. Fast forward two years into the present and I have found myself in the same position. The program is the same, but my experience is utterly different in a variety of ways this year. Over the past two years I have had invaluable experiences that have solidified my resolve to attend medical school.…

This week I went out onto the field with my task manager. Even though I feel comfortable talking with clients by myself, I still like to get more experience shadowing other caseworkers. Earlier in the week I observed caseworker Teresa Freebourn, and her many different client cases. When shadowing her, I understood Teresa Freebourn’s methods when engaging with clients. I notice she has awesome interviewing skills when engaging with children and youth. Terri’s rhetoric changes depending on the age of the young client. I was exposed to a different set of interviewing skills this week as well. A caseworker by the name of Erica Dixon asked me if I wanted to go out onto the field with her. I of course wanted more field training, and told caseworker Dixon I would go with her on a case. When she explained to me the severity of her case, I understood why Erica may needed more assistance from someone at our agency. I observed a different set of interviewing skills when I went out with Erica than what I was used to with my task manager Terri.…
