Personal Narrative: A Career As A Nurse
During my childhood my teachers would always ask me “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Without giving it much thought I would always say a teacher or a chef. As I got older I realized what I really wanted to be when I grew up. I became interested in becoming a nurse when I was around 12. My aunt, who is a nurse would always tell me stories about her patients and what was going on at the hospital she worked at. During my sophomore year I was privileged enough to job shadow my aunt’s friend Jana. It was a great, rewarding experience. I job shadowed at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center. I went to the hospital around 7 in the morning. I met Jana and she explained to me what we were going to be doing. We started off by taking a tour of the hospital. She showed me each floor and what its purpose was. We then went to the department she was assigned. She introduced me to some of her patients. …show more content…
She brought me into the patient’s rooms where they were staying and showed me things such as how to take their temperature and explained what you had to do when you were in a certain patient’s room. Then it was Jana’s lunch break. We sat in the break room and talked more about what nursing is all about. She told me that she wanted to become a nurse ever since she was little. She said she was very outgoing growing up and she always loved helping people. Her mother was a nurse in Wisconsin.
All in all, my job shadowing experience was a great experience. I learned so much about the profession and I am very excited to take the steps in becoming a nurse. Nurses are very important people because they help people that are in

I interviewed Joanna Hawkins. She works in a private organization for dialysis, called Fresenius Medical Care. It is in Birmingham, Alabama. She has been working with this agency for 12 years. The primary tasks she completes everyday are, going around to all the 24 chairs that they have patients at and tell them hello and ask them how they are doing. She will then ask them if they need anything, whether that be need for transportation, need for medications, need for help with their home environment, or need for general support. She works with three different clinics, so she only gets to see the patients at each clinic once a week. When she talks to each patient she must make sure she takes good notes, that way she can help each patient with…

This was a great experience. The think I disliked about this job shadow was watching them insert birth control. I did not like the smell or anything about it. But as Ruiter said “It takes time getting used to the smell and not letting it bother you.” I learned a lot about the different kinds of birth control and birthing methods during my shadow. “So much of what we do and see is beautiful and magical. Part of our job is hilarious and gross, and another part is borderline unbearable and heartbreaking” (A day in the life of A Labor and Delivery nurse…

For this assignment I decided to do a job shadow at Assure Drug Detection here in La Grande because it’s a field that requires knowledge of Biochemistry which is something that interests me. For my job shadow I shadowed a Lab Technician named Chung Pak. Overall I enjoyed the experience. Chung was very open and willing to answer any questions I had. I arrived at 10am and before I began my shadow I asked Chung what his daily duties entailed. I was informed that where he was primarily a Lab Tech he also takes care of clerical duties within the office such as answering phones, replying to emails, contacting the court, and putting client information into the database.…

As I grew up, she also brought me to work with her and I befriended the majority of her coworkers and I specifically remember one named Donna. She and I used to talk and go room to room to see her patients. There I learned what to do and how to talk to patients as well as how to help them recover. I’d ask them questions about their current state of health even though I knew nothing about the human body. I always loved observing all of the nurses and their day-to-day work. Examining the interactions between nurses and patients, or even nurses themselves, had piqued my curiosity because I was astounded by how close the relationships were. This has since developed into a passion leading to a career goal.…

Definitely, my most memorable shadowing experience. Although the 12-hour shift was at night, the ongoings on the Trauma Center keeps everyone on their toes. Nurses, radiologists, surgeons, even policemen all worked together on various cases. The most severe of the night was of a young man whose femur broke in half after being knocked by a vehicle while running away with a stolen bike. Having being present while the orthopedist straightened his leg with only local anesthesia was definitely an impressive moment. My first gunshot wound was seen and I observed a surgery where a large pus-filled abscess had to be cleaned from a diabetic patient. The dreaded fear of burnt flesh was…

I was assigned to visit with Molly Forrest, MN, RN, LSN at North Education Center in New Hope, MN. I started to prepare for this assignment in many different ways. Molly sent an email with a few links to explore before coming to the school. Since I had no idea what the school was like I started by reading all about the school (Mgeni, n.d.). I also printed the document titled “Shadowing a PHN for a Day: Scope of Practice Observation/Interview/Analysis.” I’m glad I printed the document ahead of time because that allowed me time to read and figure out what I was suppose to asking her.…
