Service Learning Project Analysis
I was assigned a Service Learning Project that required me to spend 25 hours with an elder/and or cognitive, physically, or developmentally delayed adult. The purpose of this project was to gain experience and acquire knowledge regarding the lifestyle, challenges, and activities of an aging adult or an adult with limitations. I was very apprehensive about this assignment. I had worked as a CNA and also volunteered in a memory care facility in the past. I felt that because of my previous experiences that this assignment was unnecessary. I already had experience working with the elderly and people with limitations. Therefore I did not think that this assignment would change my outlook on the aging population or people with limitations. I was going to be robbed of time with my family and have additional daycare costs so I could learn in an area where I was already experienced! Sue is the resident to whom I was assigned. After …show more content…
However I believe that a person lacking experience in geriatrics or lacking experience with people with limitations could benefit from this project. I used this project to help introduce my children to our aging population and the assisted living environment. I enjoyed bringing them with me to interact with the grandfriends. I wanted them to experience the benefits of bringing joy to others.
On Mother’s Day I knew that Sue was not expecting any visitors because her children do not live nearby. I wanted Sue to know that she is wonderful and has a special spot in our hearts, so my two oldest boys and I went to visit. We brought her a gift. She was so surprised and excited. Her excitement radiated onto my children. Their faces lit up with excitement to Sue’s reaction to our visit. It was amazing watching the joy my boys felt as they handed Sue the gift and the happiness she experienced receiving

When I would visit the nursing home as a child I never knew the impact it made with the patients or the impact they would have on me later in my life. I took care of my patients as if they were my own family. I came to realize this would be difficult when I would a patient decline or pass away. Working with other departments and learning the different skills I did, I came to see the value the nursing home has on its patients, family members of patients, and staff. The nursing home teaches everyone involved about the ending of a life or the appreciation of the one you have and those around…

Since I became a Certified Nurse Aid (CNA), I kept asking myself if I had chosen a good career. After taking care of one of my patients named Maria, I felt in my heart that a least I was going to be doing something that would make me feel good about. Maria loved to sing and tell jokes I remember a lot of times when she made me laugh. Sadly Maria had Alzheimer’s disease and she couldn’t perform a lot tasks by herself. She needed supervision to do everything: to get fed, to take a shower, to go to bed. And today I can say that I had a great experience on the three months that I took care of her at the Nursing Home, and sometimes I wonder how she’s doing.…

This clinical has been a highly beneficial experience for me in my nursing career. I learned a variety of skills and have learned about myself as a nurse as well. By working with my assigned mother I learned both what my strengths and weakness are. One strength I encountered was my ability to work with the mother and all her visitors with ease. I was able to communicate effectively between all parties without making an awkward atmosphere or without losing my focus on the patient’s care. One weakness I had while working with the mother and family was not being as comfortable with working with this age of population. I am used to working with the geriatric population so transitioning to working with younger adults was a different experience.…
