Reflection On My First Clinical Experience
Today began the second clinical experience here at Avalon Care Center. I was feeling confident from my last clinical experience and I was also excited to see what today had in store for me, what I was learn, what I would be able to participate in and what I would take away from today experience. Today clinical assignment was in the Alzheimer’s/Dementia care unit, where I had the opportunity alongside of Colleen. Our morning had gotten off to ruff start due to difficulties with accessing their computer data base; we were not able to assess the client’s medical chart to begin the morning medication pass. We started our day in the hospital lobby promptly at 0630, the professor started off by explaining where on the unit each of us would be, as she usually does. I was placed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) along with one other student. This week was different than previously, there were more infants and nurses and also Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) was in a different room. Because NICU was full with nurses and infants. I started off in IMCU, where I met this wonderful nurse who I connected with and stayed the whole day talking to her, when I wasn’t checking on the other student. The nurse allowed me to shadow her with the three infants she was assigned to. At each station the…

In the morning, I followed the Charge Nurse Kristy. She was great at explaining to me everything she was doing and allowing me to watch and even help with everything she had to do to get the morning started. Rounds start on the unit at 1000, and Kristy had three different lists for each of the teams of doctors. She had to go through and highlight the patients that were on the unit, their code status and prism score, whom their nurse was, and the nurse’s phone number. She likes to have this finished by 0900 because at that time she has to attend the staffing meeting…

The community I grew up in deep in the heart of Austin, Texas celebrated my heritage, honored differences in culture, and fostered personal growth and self-discovery. My parents, with the strong work ethic they developed on their family’s farms in Ghana, encouraged my brother and me to work hard and find ways to use my skills to be of service to others. My experiences engaging with the communities that I have lived inspire me to become a physician dedicated to finding the most effective ways to communicate with my patients and improve their health outcomes in different types of environments. I first worked in health care locally during the summer after my sophomore year of college when I volunteered at the People’s Community Clinic. It was there that I got my first look at direct health interventions through making health education materials in the…

The second week of my preceptorship brought many new experiences for me, and I can honestly say that each day I spend with my preceptor is better than the last. This week I focused on time management of a full patient load with continued documentation practice as well as admission and discharge procedures. I’ve had brief experiences in my past rotations assisting with discharge teaching and admission assessments however I have never been able to fully take charge and complete the process from start to finish, so this was a great learning opportunity for me.…
