Charge Nurse's Perspective
My goal for this week was to learn about leadership and management from the charge nurse’s perspective. I wanted to know what leadership skills she felt were important and its impact on the unit. My goal was achieved by having a conversation with the charge nurse on the unit about leadership. She was very informative and answered all my questions.
Summary of Clinical Activities We started our day in the hospital lobby promptly at 0630, the professor started off by explaining where on the unit each of us would be, as she usually does. I was placed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) along with one other student. This week was different than previously, there were more infants and nurses and also Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) was in a different room. Because NICU was full with nurses and infants. I started off in IMCU, where I met this wonderful nurse who I connected with and stayed the whole day talking to her, when I wasn’t checking on the other student. The nurse allowed me to shadow her with the three infants she was assigned to. At each station the

I was in another room with the other students answering questions about their upcoming exam. I reminded the students to breathe in and out before starting the exam. I also shared with them my before exam routine. Also to make sure to get enough sleep. I feel as if the students are comfortable with me. After the professor was done with midterm evaluations the students were dismissed. The professor and I went over next week’s presentation on the video “No Mas Bebes”. The video tells the story of a little-known but landmark event in reproductive justice, when a small group of Mexican immigrant women sued county doctors, the state, and the U.S. government after they were sterilized while giving birth at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center during the late 1960s and early 1970s. I look forward to presenting it next

This writer agrees leadership can be taught and learned in certain situations. Far too often, individuals are forced into leading others. The author related to her own inexperience and placement as charge nurse due to staffing issues. The American Nurse Today list nine principles for successful leadership. The first principle states a leader must have a passion and commitment to their purpose (ANA). Additionally, the ANA states a leader must know in their heart he or she is in the correct position to share their skills and talents. A nurse can exert leadership without occupying a formal leadership position by taking a leadership stance. In the course, Becoming a Leader in Health Care, it describes leadership as an attitude and not just a position (Reinertsen, 2009, p. 2). Leaders take responsibility for problems and look for ways to solve them. The nurse on an interdisciplinary team serves as a leader by acting as a patient advocate and by coordinating with the other team members to work towards a common goal for the patient. The nurse is instrumental in directing the care and communicating the essential issues in the patient’s care to the whole team. Communication is an essential part to the healthcare team. The nurse communicates with all the members of the team the vital information and ensures follow up care is received. This coordination of care and effective communication leads to positive patient outcomes and increased patient satisfaction.…

The Ethical Dilemma I was tasked with the following case from a charge nurse as part of an ethics consult. A 68 year old man was admitted to the medicine unit from Denver International Airport for altered mental status and aggressive behavior. The patient, from this point forward to be called Mr. Johnson, was found to be acutely infected from a septic wrist joint, but was also found to have frontotemporal dementia. Once the infection cleared, it was hoped that Mr. Johnson’s mental status would improve, but he remained aggressive and lacking in capacity. After much investigating, outside hospital records were found on Mr. Johnson but neither the providers nor case managers were able to find any family or interested parties, and Mr. Johnson…

One way for a nurse to show leadership is one I use quite a bit when faced with being on a team when someone else is leading. It is usually a positive move to back your leader. When they present an idea or a plan, if you back them and show others you support them, others will look up to you, especially if you are one that people look to for advice or support. One day a week I am the charge nurse for my unit. On the other days I’m not charging I still get questions from other nurses who want reinforcement for what they are doing. I am glad they come to me but if it is something that should be decided by whoever is charging that day or our manager I always redirect them to that person. I don’t mind giving…

In addition, the report also recommends nurses to be full partners with the physicians and other members of the healthcare team to effectively increase the quality of care given to the patients (National Research Council, 2013). Because nurses are such strong advocates for patients, it would truly benefit the patient to have nurses participating in leadership roles. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, embedding leadership development into the nursing curriculum will have a positive effect on the amount of nurses fulfilling leadership roles in their healthcare setting (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, n.d). As a nurse, I have seen plenty of new graduates over the years. As time goes on, it is evident how better prepared and more motivated the new graduates are from the previous graduates for these leadership roles.…

Leadership is the process of influencing, communicating, and motivating groups of people in order to accomplish goals (Huber, 2014). This role is underpinned with trust and requires an emotional intelligence from the leaders themselves. Other needed skills involve a cognitive ability to understand the situation at hand, a behavioral competency in order to adapt to the situation, and a process competency that allows effective communication to others (Huber, 2014). Leaders focus on people and group goals. Leadership is important in nursing because through leadership the various elements of nursing practice are implemented to ensure the best quality of care…

Boy was I excited when they finally discharged me. It smelled weird in there, I don't like the smell of hospitals. I mean, the stench kinda makes me want to crinkle my nose and throw it away. I guess I still haven't gotten used to it yet. It bothered me so much, having to smell it everyday when I was there. One of my nurses, Lily, came to see me before I left. She told me to take care of myself, and to stop making such a mess whenever I ate soup. She even gave me a kiss on the cheek. I wanted to ask her for her number, so I could see her again someday and hang out. I didn't ask though. I guess that if I ever wanna see her again, she'll still be working there, hopefully. The whole family came by to pick me up, even Dad. Which gave me a bit of a shock. I kept looking at his face, to see if I could figure out what he was thinking. He was focusing on the road though, when he wanted to focus on something, he focused on it like no other. That really reminded me of how stubborn Phoebe could be when she wanted to be. Looks like that's one trait she got from him. During the long ride home, Phoebe kept asking me about my stay in the hospital. D.B. was quite curious too. I told them about the awful smell, and the weird food, and the funny people I saw, and how I kept spilling my soup by accident, and that nurse Lily, and even about that one phony therapist. Phoebe practically almost died out of laughter when I told her…

This reflection is based on my observations of the need for of effective communication skills and knowledge of nurses regarding the management of aggression in elderly patients with dementia. Clinician need to be equipped with seclusion, medication and de-escalation skills to be able to manage patient aggressive behaviours safely. I have chosen these particular observations after realising how fundamental they are in implementation aggressive behaviour management strategies in patients. While working in mental health I have observed how effective it is to communicate with a patient as a way of de-escalation during verbal and physical aggression incidents. Ford, Byrt, Dooher, & ebrary (2010) point out that it is imperative for health professionals…

Leadership is the inspiration for desired response and getting work done through others (Tomey, 2009). The person, I have chosen to take part in helping me to do the interview, is T.E. She is a 30 year old African America. T.E. was born in Kingston, Jamaica on January 18, 1984 and lived there until she was ten years old. She grew up in poverty in an underserved community and suffered abuse at the hands of her stepfather. When she was ten years old her family moved to the United States to escape the poverty and ill treatment T.E. (personal communication, January 6, 2015). T.E. was able to overcome the abuse she suffered as a child. She developed into a productive citizen of society. She was able to channel the pain she suffered as a child into becoming a nurturer and caregiver to help those in need. She worked in an underserved community as a means of giving back to the community and served the underserved aggregate. I had the pleasure of working with T.E. for five years. I have watched her career advancement over these years and discovered that she is a wonderful co-worker and friend. She has been a registered nurse (RN) for ten years. She started her nursing career in telemetry at Martin Luther King Jr. hospital in South Central Los Angeles working as a float pool traveler for two years. After leaving telemetry, she worked the emergency room for three years at Centinela Hospital Medical Center (CHMC). Her next RN role was house supervisor for three years at CHMC. Now she is the director of the infection control and the wound care departments. She also works as the assistant professor at Charles Drew. She graduated with her doctorate in nursing (DNP), Practice and Nurse practitioner primary care/gerontology degree. This interview is a summary of T.E.’s viewpoints on her leadership style, changes made because of…

I thought charge nurse Jo did a fantastic job in managing the flow of the entire unit. I believe that she uses a transformational approach with a democratic leadership background. Democratic leadership is a type of leadership style that incorporate the whole group to participate in decision making. Leadership theories such as transformational leadership are constantly used to guide nursing leadership research by projecting positive outcomes (Dabke, 2016). Therefore, the approach of transformational theory will help the nurse leaders in creating a sense of collective structure that facilitates positive outcomes related to optimal nursing care (Dabke, 2016).…

    Leadership Vision

What is an organization without a vision? The vision objective puts the organizations values and goals into simplified terms every member of the team can understand and share. The same holds true for our own personal goals and aspirations. We should develop our own personal vision statements to ensure we are staying current in the growing changes of nursing and healthcare technology/techniques, to educate and lead in the most efficient means possible. My vision revolves around the mission statement, “To provide the highest level of care, one patient at a time, with meticulous attention to quality of care; serving with compassion and a dedication to improving health awareness and literacy among patients”. While simple and direct, I feel that this statement best summarizes my leadership vision for the future of nursing and institutional healthcare.…
