Sandy and her beautiful sisters
Sandy and her beautiful sisters – analyses
“Sandy and her beautiful sisters” is a short story written by Antonia Fraser. It is a rewriting of the classic fairy tale Cinderella. The story tells me, that being beautiful isn’t equal to being happy or to have a good life. The protagonist Sandy is a character with depth. She is, unlike her two beautiful sisters described as “plump” with long curly hair.
Because of her lack in beauty Sandy has grown up being the unnoticed sister, which has resulted in her being more comfortable alone then with people. She has also gotten used to service her two elderly sisters, by doing all the housework. By doing the housework she has learned to cook like a goddess, and she also works as a caterer. This again shows us, that she doesn’t like much contact with people, and that she feels secure helping people. She tries to become thin to be more like her sisters, but the attempt fails and she stays plump.
During the story evolves, and in the end of the story, she ends up being satisfied with being able to earn her own living and giving her baby a place to grow. The story takes place in Fulham, London, where the two elderly sisters live in two big intercommunicating rooms at the front of their house, while Sandy lives in a small room at the back, with a view over the garden. The rooms reflect the relationship between the sisters. The two beautiful sisters have the two best rooms suggesting that they are the best, while Sandy has the little one in the back. But like the two sisters, the rooms are empty shells, they might be big and beautiful, but that’s all. Meanwhile Sandy´s little room has a view over the garden (which she tends). The garden symbolises hope, and a new beginning. It also should remind her of the things she can do while all her sisters can do are to be pretty. In the end Sandy moves away into a flat in Sam Prince´s house where she can live with her baby. The story reminds me of Cinderella, who also cooks and cleans for her two older sisters, and in the end of the story, she moves away and gets the “prince” while leaving the two sisters behind.
I think the story is inspired by the old fairy tale, but the message has been modified. The author tries to tell us that looks are too overrated in today’s society. She also tries to tell that having a family or being able to earn your living, matters much more than beauty. In my analyses I have come to conclude, that although Sandy isn’t as beautiful as her sisters, it ends with her being happier than them. Sandy’s cooking skills earns her a nice place to live and the possibility to fulfil a dream - to publish a cooking book. So although Sandy isn’t beautiful she ends up living in a great flat with her own little baby, while the sisters are left helplessly behind. She ends up being the direct opposite of her sisters, despite her previous attempt to become more like them.

Sandy can be perceived as a victim as she is used as a cover up for Billy and Marianne’s relationship. The readers are shown this when Marianne takes Sandy to the deli for a milkshake so she can secretly meet up with Billy. If Frank had a problem with this, Marianne would use the excuse “But Dad, Sandy was there too” (Page 112). This did not happen just once but several times because Marianne felt as if Sandy was her “insurance, her guarantee she had been good” (Page 112). Sandy also shows herself to be a target as she is timid and has no self-confidence. At public appearances and dinners, she immediately feels sick and dizzy; “the smell of food combined with the heat was making her feel sicker,” (Page 37). On the night of the dance, Sandy wore a dress of Marianne’s instead of having to wear one of her own. Whilst Sandy was getting ready, she described what she saw as “a faded copy of her sister” (Page 160).…

Her mother tries to get her to act like the rich kid she is, but the more her mother tries, the more she rejects the idea and rebels. She wears black and dyes her hair unnatural colors to hide where she really comes from, a rich family. She also hides her love for playing piano because she does not want to be classified as a rich kid, but doing so gets classified as a punk or a goth. Antonia, the other main character, is classified as smart or a teacher’s pet, so a teacher’s pet and a punk; that is not usually the types that are best friends. “Regan is an example of a sister that goes above and beyond the expectations of any sister. Regan has unconditional love for her brother Liam, and she is able to convey that as a child. Most of the time, though, these siblings have a mutually supportive relationship, even if Regan is uneasy when she thinks about Liam "transitioning," becoming a woman on the outside as well as on the inside. This positive relationship is essential to Liam, who is sometimes teased at school and often bullied at home by their macho father, who embraces traditional gender roles and constantly pressures Liam to be more masculine” (Piehl). Bethany and Carla experienced success in Beauty. Carla was a famous, “beautiful catalogue model that was going to become a big time model soon after speaking with Ralph Lauren” (Martin 735). On the other hand, Bethany, the smart one, “received a $40,000 job offer straight out of college. She also published several short stories” (735). Carla was characterized as the perfect and beautiful success story, while Bethany was characterized as the ugly screw-up. However, neither person was happy in their respective positions. Carla was always annoyed, “and always hung by her fingernails in modeling. She felt like she had zero privacy, and guys would hassle her on the street and pressure her from the beginning of a relationship. She never was able to have a long relationship” (736). Likewise, Bethany did not see herself as a success story because, “she did not see herself as a beautiful individual” (736). They both envied each other’s success and looks. This alone shows the reader that the characters were very jealous of each other’s lives.…

The character in this story, Sister, seems to be in a way jealous and a little selfish, but with good reason, she has a sister, Stella-rondo, who has always been everyone's favorite and everyone would believe everything she said, from her saying that Sister was "one-sided to her,( Stella-Rondos ) "adopted" child. Sister has every reason to not like Stella-Rondo. Everyone else in the house seems to think that Sister is indeed very jealous of Stella-Rondo, and Sister can not even defend herself because that would have just verified everyone's point. Although it is a little comedic, the whole story shows bits and pieces of anyone's everyday lives. Jealousy, stubbornness, spitefulness, and sibling rivalry are the main things implicated in this story.…

In the real world, problems and complications come up and happily ever after’s don’t exist. Sexton takes the classic story of “Cinderella”, reworks it, and makes it into her own twisted version of a fairytale. She starts the audience off with a few little “rags-to-riches” accounts comparing modern culture’s unrealistic dreams to what life really is like. Then she goes into telling the readers the famously known fairytale in a sardonic tone. The audience gets a sense of frustration from her way of expressing herself in each little story she talks about. She shows the world that its not always rainbows and butterflies, the real world is more complicated than that. Sexton’s “Cinderella” highlights despair and the delusions women have about love.…
