Theme: Though one may feel different from others, we are all different from each other but still need another.

1. “Jules had a little kid sense of time and after a month when all the cigarettes were gone he didn’t seem to believe that Kent was ever going to come back.” * Reliant on Jules senses or beliefs, usually influenced by addiction or drug high. He had torn up the homework I left lying on the bed.” * Consistent hostile acts done by Jules, constant battle between her and her father. She feels like it’s her vs. world. PG119 4. “Kids from school went to the theatres downtown, not the Etoile. Most weren’t even allowed to go there because someone had gotten stabbed in one of the bathrooms. Jules didn’t know this.” * Baby starts getting into dangerous things, wrong people, places, etc. All because of no true father figure in her life. PG175 5. “He had me when he was really young. He was only fifteen. My mother died when I was little. He had to do everything by himself. He goes out of town a lot. He wanted to be a boxer when he was little, but he wasn’t strong enough.     Baby does not have that feeling of being loved; therefore, she finds comfort in the fact that she was once loved. The doll is also representative of her current state of mind.     When examining the mother’s body, Jerry and a local police officer named Todd, soon encounter the effects of this isolation as Nell begins violently kicking and screaming at the intruders in her secluded home. Unable to speak English, Nell has trouble understanding what the men are saying and can only respond herself with guttural noises, gestures and emotions. In order to make Nell more comfortable around him, Jerry returns regularly. In doing so it allows Nell to open up enough to try and communicate with him in her own way, and own language, which the doctor begins the task of deciphering. Jerry soon gains Nell’s trust and is able to communicate with her to a small extent; Nell calls Jerry her “Ga’inja” meaning her guardian angel that came out of nowhere. She looks at Jerry and Paula as a couple, a kind of parent relationship she looked up to. In this case, Nell was not given the opportunity to go to school and make friends as a child normally will, but was kept in isolation for around twenty-five years.     Baby faces many life changes growing out of childhood, she has never been able to experience the life that a child should, growing up without a mother and with a father that was a perpetual kid himself and caring for baby has been a hard task for him to carry out because he was absent most of the time.
