Rural Entrepreneurship-One key to Rural Revitalization Abstract
Entrepreneurship can play an important role in rural development. “Entrepreneur means one who creates a product on his own account, who ever undertakes on his own an industrial/trading enterprise in which work men are employed”. If entrepreneurships really encouraged in rural area it would, of course, be instrumental in changing the face of rural areas by solving the problems of unemployment, poverty, economic disparity, poor utilization of rural capacity, low level of standard of living.

Introduction

‘India lives in her villages’---- this axiom is still true today despite the service sector budding in the urban and semi urban areas. Majority of the population still lives in rural India and the large chunk of population in urban areas still live through the learning of a village life. For the strength of the country there is a necessity to develop the villages. Development of a country is a choice loaded on its people, whether urban or rural. It is individuals who shape up a society and decide its progress and performance. Urban and rural are two sides of the same coin of economic development. While the urban sector has witnessed phenomenal growth and development, fuelled by the post independence era of industrialization, the rural sector saw little corporate growth.

Rural development is more than ever before linked to entrepreneurship. Institutions and individuals promoting rural development now see entrepreneurship as a strategic development intervention that could accelerate the rural development process. Furthermore, institutions and individuals seem to agree on the urgent need to promote rural enterprises: development agencies see

    Dear Sir, Rural Entrepreneurship Development programmes ( REDPs)NABARD’s Support to RUDSETI types of Institutions In pursuance of the objective of providing alternative employment opportunities to the unemployed rural youth for taking up income generating activities in non-farm sector which impacts on reducing pressure on agriculture and land, NABARD has been extending support to various Agencies, mostly resource NGOs since 1990’s to conduct Rural Entrepreneurship Development Programmes (REDPs). Over the last couple of decades, about 8000 REDPs have been conducted through various NGOs/ Agencies with funding support from NABARD and about 2.50 lakh rural youth have been trained to take up various entrepreneurial activities. However, a lot remains to be done. 2. Over the years, the RUDSETI/ RUDSETI type of Institutions have emerged as vibrant and effective partners for conduct of rural entrepreneurship and skill development trainings for the unemployed rural youth. The pioneering role played by RUDSETI, Ujire, Karnataka has been acknowledged and during last 2-3 years, a number of banks have taken initiatives in setting up their own RUDSETI type of Institutions in various States. As on date, there are 23 RUDSET Institutions sponsored by 15 Commercial Banks having footprints in 93 districts covering 15 States. This is going to increase in coming years. 3. NABARD had conducted a Workshop for the RUDSET type of Institutions and their Sponsoring Banks in December 2006 at Dharmasthala, Dakshina Kannada District, Karnataka wherein a number of issues were discussed and in the light thereof, guidelines were issued to the Commercial Banks/ RRBs giving details of the eligible items and quantum of grant support extended by NABARD to the RUDSETI type of institutions.
