Reflective Essay Before I took composition II I knew how to write an essay in MLA format, but I did not know how to cite my work or type a paper in APA format. My expectation for the class before taking it, to be honest, was not to have a 2-4 page paper due every week. I knew we were going to have papers due just not as many. During the course of the semester there were a few hard assignments that had to be done and those were the research paper, and APA, MLA work cite paper. The research paper was the most challenging to me simply because I really don’t like to type papers and that goes for writing them as well. It’s not like I don’t know how to it’s just that I seem to lose interest and motivation in doing it. On top of that I have to type up 6-8 pages and a lot of time I can’t really just free type that well. The work cited was difficult to me because it was really my first time learning how to construct an APA and MLA cite page. In the beginning it really wasn’t clicking in my head as to how it’s supposed to be done, like how to add in the online cite and where to add it in. Everyone knows the easiest assignment was the memo. I’m sure everyone already had a resume typed up and saved. I learned how to put one of those together in my high school English class. The memo was easy as well, all it was is typing up a letter to your school president and it didn’t have to be more than a good healthy paragraph. Oh and must I not forget about the movie review which at first I was having a bit of a struggle with but I finally managed to get it together picking a movie both the teacher and I both enjoy. The book review on the other hand should have been in the paragraph right above this one. That paper we had to do about an experience on something was easy along with the rest because it was about me running track. I mean that’s something I could write an autobiography about. The two research papers

“Today is January 17, 1452.”, announced the king. “Our three kingdoms and my staff are here for one reason…” Princes Maddie was seated in her throne and her mind was wondering. “ … for my daughter’s marriage.” The king continued. Beautiful princes Maddie was only paying attention to Cedric, a place slave. Maddie and Cedric were silently mouthed words to each other. When Cedric mouthed a joke, Maddie accidentally let out a laugh. “Maddie!” Yelled her father. “Pay attention!” Her father’s raspy unsettled voice screeched. “Where was I, oh ya. Now, we will have a series of competitions for our young princes to compete in for my daughter, Maddie’s, hand in marriage. Let's introduce our princes.” The king’s voice…

Vance’s class, I would say MLA was the one of the biggest issues I struggled with when writing a paper. Such an easy fix, but I did not have a teacher who enforced it, so I never learned until moving to The Meadows. However, another thing I learned was difficult was to adapt to each teacher’s idea of a “good paper.” Some teachers thought I did well on certain aspects of writing, where others thought I struggled. An example of this might be that Mr. Long would think my thesis was well written, but Mr. Vance thought it was to vague and lacking description. This could also be because of the grade I was in. In 9th grade, my papers were not set to such a high standard as in 10th grade. What I thought was good in 9th does not work for 10th. This is probably true as well for 11th and 12 grade, even…

During the past four years of attending Newark High School, working on MLA format was something teachers worked very hard on to teach students. Every essay written by each student had to be correctly written in MLA format or else you would fail a writing assignment. This has been taught since the start of Freshmen year of school. There was no way around this rule. From just graduating High School, I am very experienced with writing essays. In many different classes we had to write essays. We did not just write essays in English. Students had to write essays in Math, Biology, Psychology, French, History, Government, and many more classes.…

Many professors may think that a concurrent senior coming out of high school like me cannot have the skills needed to succeed in college-level writing; however, after taking Composition I and II in the fall and spring of my Senior year, I believe I can write well thought and crafted college level essays. While I have strengthened some areas of writing more than others, I have learned and acquired many important concepts and techniques and incorporated them into my writing. By taking Composition I and II, I believe that I have developed the required skills and ideologies to succeed in college-level writing. Although a college level paper should demonstrate an understanding of tone, style, cohesion,…

Additionally, we learned a lot about the different styles of writing. For instance, informal and formal writing, compare and contrast, and rhetorical analysis. Every essay comes with the MLA format, with signal phrases, quotations marks, and parenthetical citations. This information is very relevant to any paper I will write for a class in the future. I had never before been taught the correct way to do this. The compilation of knowledge this class has given me.…

In nearly all colleges and universities, students will be required to write at least one term paper or essay in their college career. Many of these colleges have a specific way in which they require students to present the information learned. At Bethel University, students are required to use APA formatting when writing papers. I have learned there are four steps in the APA writing process. These steps include beginning with a thesis, giving evidential support to the thesis, connecting the evidence, and composing concise sentences (Read section, Unit 3). Throughout my MBA program, I will use information learned in this process to construct all of my written papers.…

During the past two and half years at University of South Alabama, I took several writing courses. When I first started the Master program, I was very afraid because I always had a weakness of writing papers. I can honestly since starting the program and having understanding professors that gave perfect feedback, I am a little more confident in writing papers. Even though at times it still hard for me to gather information to write a paper. Prior to starting at USA, I have been out of school for seven years and couldn’t remember how to write in American Psychological Association (APA) style. APA has several rules that you have to follow in order for it to be correct. I feel that I have gotten a lot better with APA format, especially after the professors has taken off several points for different mistakes. I have learned from my mistakes during my time at USA.…

I did not write a real paper in high school until the tenth grade. We had to write about World War I in our World History class. Our World History teacher was our hardest teacher, so I spent weeks on this paper. We had to turn in a rough draft, where we got points for turning it in. However, she gave typed ones extra points. I did not know that they got extra points for typing theirs. This led to me getting nervous and rewriting my whole paper in three days. About a week later I learned the reasoning behind her extra points. That paper taught me different ways to start my paragraphs such as, a quote. We also had to argue, in that paper, the cause of World War I. That was a learning curve. I had to learn how to structure an argumentative paper. A paper on World War I was challenging, however I did it…

In high school most teachers I have been taught from would prefer their papers in MLA format. Many teachers in high school might have a different definition of MLA format, so some points in MLA format I might be confused on or some lost in miscommunication. MLA format is not the only format I was taught though, I was also taught APA format in engineering and in one of my final papers in composition. The final paper was a rhetorical analysis using a picture, pieces of writings and other facts found. I was taught to do a work cited and how to use in-text citations with the sources used. Once again, some of this might have been lost in miscommunication between the teacher and students due to lack of explanation.…

Once I got into college the first time, it was a huge eye opener to the amount of papers I had to write and I always found it difficult to find enough information about my paper with the fear of plagiarizing someone else’s work. My experience of writing was very sparse when it came to more than a page of work at a time. Every class I took in college seem to have at least one 10-page paper that needed to be written; I did not enjoy this and found it very frustrating. “Writing is a challenge for most writers, but for novices it is particularly challenging because they have limited experience of the writing process. They have not yet developed a more experienced writer’s understanding of writing or ability to deal with the emotional pitfalls of writing. As a result, writing can fill novices with feelings of dread and self-doubt.” (J. Cameron,…

I think the two most difficult assignments this quarter for me were my RPF and my OHTWF. These two papers were the most difficult for me, because in the RPF there were a lot of compound and complex sentences needed in every paragraph, which was hard. In my OHTWF paper, what I found difficult was all the sources I had to read. It was hard staying interested in what I was reading in order to write my paper. This of course made it hard to comprehend all that I read. Which then made it hard to remember what to write in my paper. I probably should of chose a different event.…
