A Brief History Of My Writing
I’ve been out of school for quite some time and have decided to get back into school to hopefully better myself, writing papers was always my downfall. Since being out of school the most writing I have done is work instructions for my department at my place of employment. I always had trouble with being able to find enough to say about a subject to meet the requirements set forth by the teacher; this was my struggle. So, I take this class to hopefully better myself in this area and to progress into a better writing style. Topics in this paper are going to be what I see as the 3 stages of my writing history. My very brief writings of High School to the rampant writings in College to the not writing anything for a good 20 years and then needing to write instructions for a company trying to complete validations for the FDA. …show more content…
Once I got into college the first time, it was a huge eye opener to the amount of papers I had to write and I always found it difficult to find enough information about my paper with the fear of plagiarizing someone else’s work. My experience of writing was very sparse when it came to more than a page of work at a time. Every class I took in college seem to have at least one 10-page paper that needed to be written; I did not enjoy this and found it very frustrating. “Writing is a challenge for most writers, but for novices it is particularly challenging because they have limited experience of the writing process. They have not yet developed a more experienced writer’s understanding of writing or ability to deal with the emotional pitfalls of writing. As a result, writing can fill novices with feelings of dread and self-doubt.” (J. Cameron,

Like me, many students believe that procrastinating and writing a one-draft paper is the best way to approach a writing assignment; however, research claims this method has numerous negative effects on the individual. Truth be told, it’s been a few years since the last time I walked into a writing extensive course like English 1302. The last time that I sat in front of a computer, and slaved away for hours trying to create the perfect paper was in 2011, during my first semester at Texas Tech. It was English 101, and people had that it’s a class that I should not take lightly, but of course I thought I knew better. Let’s just say that I figured out, I was not the greatest writer in the world after all, but high school definitely made me think I was. Before I entered into my first semester of college level English, it was not unordinary for me to write a paper that received applause from teachers all the way through senior year. I wrote essays on books, such as the “The Great Gatsby” to critically breaking apart poems. One assignment that I remember vividly was my critical summary over Robert Frost’s Poem, “The Road Less Traveled”. Alas, those easy days are gone. Most of my time now is spent typing up emails to staff and teachers. Since I have been enrolled at Texas Tech, I have worked in Texas Tech’s School of Law in the Administrative Office. Much my work is behind a screen typing up emails. It has taught me a lot, so I feel as though I’ve become pretty proficient when it comes to writing up formal messages or relaying information in a professional way. I believe that I have a decent amount of experience when it comes to my writing abilities, and hopefully that will continue to grow throughout my time in this class.…

The five steps of the writing process are equally vital to the succession of any writing assignment, whether it is for work or school. The five stages include PREWRITING, PLANNING, DRAFTING, REVISING, and PROOFREADING. As our text (Arlov, 2014), explains, “Writing is not a single act, but a process composed of several steps,” (p. 3). Moreover, constructing a strong paper that is well-written (no matter how tedious it seems), requires efficaciously executing all five phases. It is crucial not to take shortcuts by eluding any step of the writing process.…

I used to believe I was a good writer. Throughout my elementary school education, creative writing dominated curriculum which allowed my extremely creative mindset to thrive. In middle school, I developed an elitist mentality about my writing ability. Believing that I reached my academic peak, I felt no need to sharpen my writing skills, causing me to become close minded to critique or other writing styles. Upon entering high school, I still clung to the idea that I was the best, but after my first week of class, I realized how weak my writing skills were in contrast to those of other students. Now, I am aware of my strengths and weaknesses as a writer, and hope to have come far from my middle school self.…

Over the course of the past three months, I have had the distinct pleasure of testing my writing capabilities through the Introduction to College Writing course. I have always had a passion for writing in all forms, but in previous years, the course work in grade-level English classes have been unchallenging of my writing ability. I have been heavily involved in Bonneville High School’s newspaper through journalism since my freshman year. This allowed me to strengthen my writing capability as I was drafting throughout the entire school year. I have never truly had to apply myself until I enrolled in English 101. Since the beginning of the class, I have faced various hardships while writing essays in unfamiliar styles, such as drafting a response to a scholarly article and synthesizing opposing perspectives. I have learned that I am more than capable in writing in different styles and that all of my work will be quality content regardless of the topic. I overcame the obstacles that have challenged me, and my essays exhibit that I am fully prepared to continue my work in English 102.…

My writing history is all over the place. I took Honors English my eleventh grade year, and loved it but took AP English my senior year and hated it. Mr. Palmer, who taught honors, was my favorite English teacher. He let us write about whatever came to mind on Fridays, whether we were ranting about classes or just had a fun story to tell. My favorite part about him is that he actually taught me how to write. My AP teacher did not improve our writing but only critiqued it. In my opinion, you can always learn how to write better. Even with being in AP I wish she fixed my writing more than just giving me a grade. More than half our students failed the English exam and the national average was a 2 on a scale of 5. So, within the past year writing…

Throughout my entire life, reading and writing has always been a major aspect of my learning journey. Starting all the way back to elementary school, I was introduced to basic concepts of reading and writing in all different types of ways. Every type of method a teacher would have us do had its own way of getting the technique or point across to the class in a way that the class could understand and retain it. I continue to learn new things about reading and writing today as I advance in my college career. As we progress in our lives, sometimes it is smart, and also fun, to look back at some of the times when you were learning those things and see how far you have come from those times. Not only do I want to look back at those times, but also I want to really think about how those times have gotten me to where I’m at today.…

My background as a writer only goes as far as high school assignments. Even then, I have not done much writing. My first year in high school, I do not remember us doing any writing. The most I remember writing is short essays, stories, and poetry for a class project. Other than that project, I do not recall doing much writing. The project was to write stories, essays, and poetry about our life. My second year in high school, I was supposed to write more because it was English 10 Writing, but I only think I wrote two essays the whole year. Because I read the whole play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare as a part of class, I had to research and write an essay on Julius Caesar that was one full page. Also, I wrote a persuasive essay for Virginia’s…
