Romeo and Juliet: Speech

‘Where there is love there is life’. Would we be here without love? Without love in our lives, is there still a reason to live? According to Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, without love we would die. Love is needed to exist. Isn’t the endless supply of love poems an indication of just how much love is essential to life? Also, the poem, loves philosophy by Percy Shelley supports the quote as it refers to life not being worthwhile if she cannot be loved.
Love was shared between Romeo and Juliet, and when this was denied to them, they ended their lives, as without this love they felt their lives could not go on. ‘My grave is like to be my wedding bed’ is a simile Juliet uses to explain how if she cannot marry Romeo, if she is denied his love then she shall die. She feels that without his love there is no reason for her to live. Juliet also says ‘be not so long to speak, I long to die’ which also prove the quote correct as she is expressing that without Romeo’s love she feels she simply cannot live. ‘Where there is love there is life’ is supported in the play Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare with the conclusion of the main characters killing themselves, ending their lives, simply because they believe that life would be unlivable without each other’s love. Yes this is dramatic and you may say ‘oh’ but it’s all made up – it doesn’t happen in real life, however it is a fact that on average 10 people a day commits suicide because they feel that they cannot live without love. ‘Juliet is the sun’ is a metaphor in which Romeo describes Juliet as the sun. As you would all know, without the sun there is no life on earth, without the sun we would all die. Therefore Romeo is basically saying that without Juliet’s love there is no life.
In Percy Shelley’s poem ‘loves Philosophy’ the elements of nature are described as natural pairs, that one cannot exist without the other. This displays love as a natural part of life through imagery, ‘the mountains kiss the high heaven and the waves clasp one another’. The author explains that nothing in the world is single….that each thing on earth, human or nature is part of a pair that when put together to ‘meet and mingle’. This is his definition of ‘where there is love there is life.’

We may feel this type of love sometime in our lives, a love so strong that without it we feel as though life cannot go on. Lives are ended more often than most of us would be aware of simply because of the feeling that they are not loved. Also through Percy Shelly’s poem ‘loves philosophy’ as all parts of life on earth are described as pairs. The quote is expressed through imagery throughout the poem, showing that without love life could not go on.
