Response to Intervention (RTI) is a broad and systematic approach for using different kinds of assessments during instructional times to guide students in areas of weakness. It has become a system that is used in all grades, kindergarten through twelfth grade. Some preschools have begun to show an interest in RTI, and may use a similar approach within their classrooms. RTI focuses on children who have a specific learning disability in reading, writing or mathematics. The program monitors each child’s progress with assessments and small group interventions. RTI has become somewhat of an innovation for grades K-12. It is a new way of helping children who show an area of difficulty. The traditional model was waiting for children to fail repeatedly in a specific area before referring them for special education services. Now with RTI students can have an intervention in that one specific area. “Just as in the public schools, there is a pressing need in the early childhood field to customize teaching and learning to address the needs of an increasingly diverse population of young children and families” (Buysse, pg. 4). There are lots of children who have a variety of weaknesses, but with a program like RTI, those weaknesses can be addressed quickly and in a way that will better suit the child. The program is used to catch students who fall below typical levels for their age and grade. The next step is to put those children in an intervention program with the correct area of need. The purpose of RTI is to utilize assessments as a way to monitor progress. Five Individual Growth and Development indicators are “oral language (Picture Naming), phonological awareness and analysis (Rhyming and First Sounds), alphabet knowledge (Sound Identification) and comprehension (Which One Doesn’t Belong?)” (McConnell, pg. 267).     Williams has taken to assist in creating gains in student achievement is to institute data board meetings at each grade level. As part of the PLC process, teachers gather data about students’ specific learning needs and meet together weekly to analyze this data together. Initial screening is done early in the year to establish a base line for each student’s level of learning. Teachers record this data on color coded cards and place them into targeted intervention groups and attach the cards to a bi-folding board. They bring this data to a meeting with Mrs. Williams as well as the intervention specialist and special education teachers. During these meetings each student’s needs are discussed and decisions are made as a team about what intervention programs will best meet their needs. After six to eight weeks of working with students with these initial interventions, the team reconvenes with a second round of assessment data to analyze progress that has been made. Then the team discusses what possible changes to make to the interventions being offered and make necessary changes. This process continues until the end of the school year. At the end of the year, all the colored cards are moved around on the board indicating the progress students have made.     The Founding Fathers of our great nation, the United States of America are some of the most intelligent thinkers America has ever known. They envisioned the future of our country and acted accordingly. Their Constitution, which was applicable in the 1700s, is still followed nearly 250 years later. They envisioned a country run by an elected leader, with two houses or representation to ensure equal representation. Such a system is still used to great effect. They gave rights to the American people, rights that would not be seen in most monarchies of the time. Yet these rights endured and are followed today. Rights that many other countries took example from and implemented in their own societies. The foundation of our country was built upon the policies of the Founding Fathers. Domestic, Social, and Economic policies are still followed today, although not to the same extent as in the 1700s, but there is a clear link between American policies in the 21st century and American policies in the 18th century. Yet the policy that has been dramatically changed, the dogma that the founders of our country followed in all their wisdom, but we do not today, is foreign policy. American foreign policy of the 18th century was that of non-interventionism. We followed this ideology for quite some time, up until the Presidency of Theodore Roosevelt in which he changed our policy from non-interventionist to interventionist, from reactive to proactive. Our country changed our policy, and not for the better.     Response to Intervention can be used in two different ways in a preschool. First, it helps children to avoid scholastic failure. Second, it provides by observation and overseeing each student to see if they have autistic behaviors early on. This is vital for children that as educators we help them not just scholarly, but also observing if they have a disability.     Robistow’s students are special education, so I usually am working more individually with them or they have an Individual Behavior Plan in their IEP. Gen education students with behavior issues get the Check In system for data collection purposes as part of RTI for Tier2. If the data shows this student is not making eighty percent of his/her points over six weeks, this would be discussed at a Data Review/RTI meeting.
