Report to the COO The introduction of information systems in health care industry has made enormous development in patient care and satisfaction. The interoperability of the different systems with in a organization is important to achieve effectiveness of the system. The process of developing and integrating the information system is time consuming, complex and costly. This paper is a report submitted by an informatics director to the chief operating officer of an organization proposing a solution to solve the communication problems within the information system. Maintaining a proper communication channel between the different information systems is a key aspect in providing continuum of care. Several different systems and solutions had been introduced in the health care industry with the goal of improving the communication among the health care providers (Blazona & Koncar, 2007). The interconnection of devices is necessary to ensure the efficient workflow and communication within a hospital system. Developing new devices and integrating the existing systems together can attain this effectiveness. A wireless communication system called ‘Health Port’ has developed to improve the workflow and communication for the healthcare providers. The device will accept the alerts and sent to the relevant person regarding the treatment of the patient. For example, if a medication is due at a specific time, the device will alert the nurse during the time. Also once the medication is given, it will transfer the data to the system and help to provide a communication chain between the providers. Many of the health care information management system have developed on the Health Level 7 (HL7) standards. HL7 is a standard format used for the transmission of health information between the different systems. The main
