Relationships In The Outsiders

The Outsiders is a novel written by SE Hinton. It was first published in 1967 and is a novel written for young adults. It is about a boy named Ponyboy who belongs to a social group called “Greaser” which dislikes the “Socs” which stands for Socials. The novel teaches about groups, friendships and affection for each other. In the novel there is violence between the two groups and how the greasers changed from violent to knowing affection. The relationship between the Curtis Brothers has change throughout the story. This is demonstrated through the different relationships they had at the start and at the end, how their relationship changed and what caused their relationship to change.
From the start and the end of the novel, the Curtis brothers
Darry who is cold and hard, Sodapop who is cheerful and popular and Ponyboy who is intelligent and is not the usual greaser, are brothers. At the start Ponyboy who believes that Darry is annoying and cold don’t like each other, while Sodapop is friendly and is friendly to both of them. Ponyboy and Darry don’t get along at the start but as the novel progress, Darry understands that he needs to protect his brother and Ponyboy who realises that Darry was worried when he ran away. In chapter 3-4 Ponyboy believed that Darry didn’t need him but in chapter 7-8 when Darry had found Ponyboy, he was crying. The difference between the relationships they had at the start and the end is different. This shows the audience that the relationship they once had changed after Ponyboy ran away. This shows that there relationship changed throughout the novel because of Ponyboy, Sodapop and Darry.
