Outsiders In The Outsider

Today more than ever, people are grouped into social classes based on their friends. You could be considered popular, or lame. This is not just true for middle school, but also life in the 50s. The book The Outsiders focuses on two main cliques, the Greasers and the Socs. One might think that the name represents Greasers, and what they have to deal with, but the real outsiders are specific people. The outsiders are the people who dare to be different from the stereotype of their group, who believe people should be judged on who they are, not social class. Major outsiders in the book are Darry, Ponyboy, and Cherry Valance. Darry is the brother to Ponyboy, and a strong built, tall, handsome man. Not only is he a very physical person, but he is also very intelligent. If not for his need to provide for his family, Darry would have gone to college, and been very successful in life. “The only thing keeping Darry from being a Soc is us.” (pg111). You can tell this from looking at her the second you make eye contact. She follows the basic rules, and enjoys her popularity, but is deeper than most Socs go. Cherry is a Soc, but takes people in for their company. She hates violence, and wants to do whats right for everyone, She tries to build people up instead of down. She is an outsider because most Socs are basic, unfeeling and unthinking. Where most Socs would have grouped Johnny and Pony with Dally at the movies, she appreciated how they had resisted him, and saw the spark of difference in their eyes. Outsiders in this book are people who stay true to themselves, and not who they are made out to be. Darry attempted to do his best, but made the sacrifice when he was needed. Ponyboy embraces his love for movies and enjoys the company of people who he likes. Cherry opens her heart instead of closing it to others. Outsiders are needed to create diversity, and while they may be different, they are not
