Relationship Between Trese And Batman
This final paper tackles a psychoanalytic-feminist reading of Budjette Tan and KaJo Baldisimo’s “Trese” comics and its main protagonist Alexandra Trese. The main focus is on the standalone piece “Thirteen Stations” as found in Jessica Hagedorn’s “Manila Noir” anthology, with the other 26 issues in the six official volumes already in print as supplements. Alexandra Trese is placed in comparison to DC’s Batman/Bruce Wayne, a similar figure in Western popular literature, and Nicole Lacson from Arnold Arre’s “The Mythology Class,” another, earlier Philippine mythology-themed graphic novel.
In Philippine popular literature, Budjette Tan and KaJO Baldisimo’s “Trese” comics series is unique in that it somehow manages to create a balance between

So far, Trese’s gender has not played a particularly great role in the series, except for when her adversaries underestimate her, as in “Thirteen Stations” when the aswang clan “thought [Trese] was the appetizer. The hungry horde simply saw a little lady in the middle of the dining hall.” In “Case 17: Fight of the Year,” she is seen dressed up at a party, looking characteristically different without her signature coat. The fifth and sixth volumes hint at a possible romance between Trese and Maliksi the

Sailormoon, the world renowned animated series, comes from the Japanese Shōjo manga, written and illustrated by female author Naoko Takeuchi. The main distinguishing feature of Shōjo manga is that it is specifically aimed at young female viewers and involves some form of (usually magical) female protagonist (Saito 143). Kumiko Saito, in her essay on Magical Girl Anime and the Challenges of Changing Gender Identities in Japanese Society, acknowledges that the Shōjo genre exhibits “various possibilities of power for both men and women”; however, she argues that these potentials are marginalized by “contradictory messages conveyed by metaphors of magic and transformation” (162). In this essay, I will explain the ways in which the internationally…

The second myth that is founded in the comic book is “Myth of the Vigilante”. Basically, Batman sees Gotham City as a city full of violence and therefore, decides to bestow upon the town acts of heroism. Batman is called vigilante because of the fact that he helps saves the city but also no one knows who this man is. Also, in the comic, Batman does take limits to the extreme to make sure that the citizens of Gotham City are safe. He is appointing himself to enforce safety on the community but also at the same time, enforcing himself to have his identity stay hidden. They usually deliver words of wisdom that can be become anyone’s motto. Among them we can find Dumbledore, Yoda, Miyagi and Haymitch. Bruce Wayne’s journey is positively endowed with mentors. The most obvious option would be his father, commonly any boy’s role model. His life was short, and his company to Bruce even more, but his presence endured the test of time. His strong words clearly rang in his son’s mind for the rest of his life. Thomas Wayne was a rich man, who loved his family. He was a philanthropist who believed in peace. His last words to Bruce were “Bruce, don’t be afraid.”, and in retrospect these are words he strongly lived by. Another mentor of Wayne is Henri Ducard, Ra’s Al Ghul. It was this man who drove Bruce to becoming Batman, he challenged him to embrace his fears. Ducard trained him to become the machine of crime-fighting he later becomes when he faces the Joker. Ducard’s presence in the story is brief, but without him Bruce Wayne wouldn't have found Batman in himself. Bruce Wayne encounters this darkness and embraces it, but he struggles to find his balance. This brings up the final, and most important mentor in his life, Alfred Pennyworth. Alfred’s job is to butler for Bruce, but he represents much more than any of that. Alfred was there for Bruce after his parents were murdered and took care of him. Alfred provides wisdom to Bruce when he…

Medea was not, however, quite the conventional female of her culture for she is described as, "a lioness, not human, wilder than Tyrrhenian Scylla." Her use of masculine language - "I would rather fight three times," - suggests she is almost male despite being a 'model' wife of her time: "I have borne you sons." Nora also acts unconventionally for her era, "[borrowing] without her husband's consent," but is still a stereotypical wife in a sense, playing with her children and being her husband's inferior, a 'featherbrain' and 'skylark'.…
