10. Carlo J. Caparas is a comic strip creator, writer, director and producer who became sensational known for his created local superheroes and comic book characters that are still popular to Filipinos until now. Some of his creations turned Filipino icons such as “Panday” (a Blacksmith hero) and many others. As a producer and director, Carlo J. Caparas produced box-office movies based on comics and true-to-life stories and crimes. In 2009 he received National Artist Award granted by the President of the Philippines.

Mars Ravelo is also a comic strip creator and writer who became phenomenal in the Philippines for his created superheroes such as “Darna” (a Filipino version of Wonder Woman), Dyesabel (name of the Filipino mermaid/heroine), and many others. During his time, the “Golden Age of Comics” flourished. Like Carlo J. Caparas, Mars Ravelo’s creations and writings were turned into films and became box-office hit during 1960′s to 1980′s. Ravelo was also the highest paid comic writer during his time. Until now, his creations is still influential to Philippine contemporary literature.
8. The youngest among the list, Louie Mar Gangcuanco published his debut novel entitled “Orosa-Nakpil, Malate” at the age of 18. The novel illustrates the pink culture in the streets of Orosa and Nakpil, which is known as the haven of gay Filipino culture. The novel became an instant hit, becoming a bestseller months after it was released. His work was featured in the top-rating TV show, Sharon, in June of the same year. In August 2006, Louie Mar was awarded the Y Idol Award (Youth Idol Award) by Studio 23’s Y Speak. Later that month, the Sentro ng Wikang Filipino conferred a Sertipiko ng Pagpapahalaga for Orosa-Nakpil, Malate. His phenomenal novel is endorsed by prominent people and institutions including the multi-awarded director, Jose Javier “Joey” Reyes, Dr. Jaime Galvez Tan (former DOH secretary) and Dr. Raul Destura of the National Institutes of Health Philippines.

    Robert Arneson was born in 1930 in the town of Benicia, California. Growing up, Robert’s father would encourage him to draw constantly. Robert would get most of his inspiration at this age from all the comics his father would read him. Robert would imagine himself in various hero-like roles in his drawings and even at this young age he was able to put together well thought out stories with his drawings. He continued to gain experience with drawing and was on the role to becoming a professional cartoonist by doing small cartoons for the sports section of the local weekly newspaper. After graduating high school he attended the College of Marin in Kentfield where he continued to produce cartoons for the newspaper. Here at the College of Marin he was finally introduced to his first ceramics class. He had never done anything with ceramics beforehand and as a result he received a low D grade.     Filipino komiks are known to for featuring melodramatic soap operas targeting not the children but the adult readers. Filipino komiks would eventually be known for featuring melodramatic soap operas aimed not at children but at adult readers. This development presents a marked difference from the way American comics have been perceived. (although this perception has changed since the mid-1980s.) The komiks were intended for adults, but they were still considered as a low form of literature. Francisco Conching, Mars Ravelos, Alfredo Alcala and Nestor Redondo have yet to be recognized as “artists” by the mainstream critics. Interestingly enough, the komiks influenced by manga(Japanese Comics) and anime (Japanese Anime), are mostly being read by young people(teens and pre-teens) rather than adults. This changes in cultural influence has brought an impact in the Philippine Culture as expressed in komiks. Komiks is a product of media which was once successful in the market and can also be considered now as a tool for communication, entertainment and even in the field of education. The widespread acceptance of komiks as a distinct medium of Philippine culture signals is legitimacy. Filipinos really love comics, but sadly, most of us grew up believing that comics has nothing to give and just a cheap kind of entertainment. “Cheap entertainment” is a phrase often used in correlation with Philippine made comics even up to the present time.
