Reflective Essay 'The Eater Reader'
English 101 is an important seminar to its’ students because for most they are able to develop skills that they never previously had. In the class the professor had us critically read The Eater Reader by James Miller and then develop our essays on each chapter. The essays each requires each class member to write an analytical essay on the text in the chapter. The essays then go through a process to make them better. The professor would write down his or her thoughts on the essay and students would read each other’s essays to critique them. That allows the author of the essay to develop the essay into a meaningful piece of work. After that process of completed the next chapter had the same process completed all over again until the book was completed. Once the book was completed we had to expand two essays of our choice. To do that we had to come up with our own unique selection process. Common questions such as (Which material made the most sense to us? Which will be the easiest to make into a 5 page essay? Etc.) all while keeping the idea of essay expansion in mind. Once the essay was expanded, the same …show more content…
Throughout the book, Miller brings attention to many different points in which the modern day consumer naturally overlooks. For example, in chapter two, Miller talks about the chemicals that are integrated into Twinkies to give them a longer shelf life. What do those chemicals do to the consumers body? The assignments allow us to incorporate what we pick out as key points in the text and apply them within our individual work. For the duration of the past couple months my writing as an individual has progressed more continuously than it did in the previous four years in high school. I have been able to take the constructive criticism from the writing lab, my class mates, along with my professor’s notes and apply them into my

She has provided the reader with an overall convincing argument involving women and body image through the use of an intelligent voice, first-hand experiences, and information on the focus of industries.…

Before arriving on my first day of instruction, I believed that my argumentation skills were at a reasonable level and as a result I was not going to learn an abundance in English 2, critical thinking and writing. However, this was not the case. I quickly realized that the pathos, ethos and logos of which was introduced to me in high school, had long lost their meaning and subsequently found myself in the deep end of the swimming pool, once again. With that being said, through learning these concepts, planning for the subsequent tasks and writing the assigned essays, I acquired a substantial amount of knowledge which is widely applicable.…

English 101 has been an amazing class and I feel like I have grown more than I expected. I was apprehensive about taking an English class because I have been away from school for almost seventeen years. I have not written an essay since 1996 and I knew many things have changed. I was especially concerned with citations. However, I found myself being able to work though citations with little effort.…

English 101 however, helped me improved the areas in which I was weak in from high school. Before, it was difficult to find the bigger meaning of an article, poem, or any form of writing in general. However, with the help from taking this course I was able to figure out how to add meaning to the essay. I also learned how to add evidence and analysis them better in my body paragraphs as well. It was difficult in the past, but now I gained skills such as outlining, writing rough drafts and the organization needed for a successful essay. I hope in English 102 that I will use my English 101 skills and be even more skilled in my essay writing. I also hope to learn more about adding evidence within the paragraphs and honing in the essay to make it all flow together. Also in English 102 I hope that I will learn to be more confident with my essays. I have talked in a couple of assignments where my confidence makes me question whether or not to add certain analysis into essays which sometimes may have made my grade not as good as it could have been. In English 102, I hope I will not question myself as much and show more confidence. I also wish to eliminate repetition in English 102. I have received many comments that I repeat my analysis a lot and that also cuts of some points of my grade. I need to continue the analysis more rather than just repeat it in a different way. With these two core English classes that I have/will take, I know that my foundation in writing will be…

For the second semester, the College English 1B online class consisted of reading response journals, discussion boards, analytical essays, and group presentations. As this course progressed, I discovered insights about myself as a reader and my analytical strengths and weaknesses. During this discovery, old and new habits arose in the reading process. Ultimately, the goal of this course was to improve my reading and analytical skills.…

A few preferred hobbies are swimming, playing football and sleeping, after I joined AUS. The topic given for this essay by professor Craven is “Your experiences with writing 101”. Briefly, it was a radical change from high school writing which included letter to the editor or an email, to university level writing that consists of writing five paragraph long essays. Initially, most of the students seemed clueless about the subject’s guidelines and tasks. However, with the help of the professors, most of us managed to do well and gain immense knowledge about the subject.…
