Reflection On Collaborative Professional Development
The collaborative professional development session has helped me grow as a literacy leader. I feel like this project has made me more confident, creative, and overall more of a professional. Before we started this project I knew some information about phonics. However, since I had to present on phonics, I took my role seriously and learned as much as I could. I am proud to say that I now feel like I can teach and help my colleagues confidently because I have the necessary knowledge. Not only do I feel confident with the content of phonics but I also feel ready to communicate and collaborate with my colleagues. This experience has given me the opportunity to figure out how to speak professionally. I learned when communicating to colleagues I need to keep in mind that they are adult learners that need to not be talked down. Instead, they need to be respected and have the material explained to them while allowing them to work hands on if there is an opportunity to do so. …show more content…
Instead of presenting like any other presentation, I worked with my group to find the best possible approach. I learned that there is more to presenting then just talking. To help our learners I created folders for all of their paperwork. This allowed everything to be organized and save time by only needing to pass out one folder instead of multiple sheets. Knowing that there are many different types of learners we included hands on activities and a note sheet too go along with our presentation. This was to help kinestatic learners as well as those who needed help following along and taking notes. I feel like by adding the folders, activities, and note sheets the presentation was stronger and more

Once I had completed my presentation I felt there were a few things that didn’t go so well. I felt that my presentation wasn’t long enough for me to be able to explain my role in depth. Although I received good feedback from my peers, my self evaluation of my presentation wasn’t quite as positive. “Peer assessment is another means of encouraging reflection.” Petty (2004:323) My peers felt that at times I talked to the board rather than made eye contact with the group however they felt that this improved as time went on. I have identified that I am more comfortable in my workshop than I am in a classroom situation. Through teacher training and self evaluation of my own practice, I feel this will help me to improve my confidence over time.…

I feel it is important for me to continually improve my knowledge to ensure that I am aware of and follow all the current health and social care standards, legislation, and guidelines for good practice as well ensuring I follow my company’s policies and procedures. I feel it is vital that I pass any new knowledge to my team because this provides them with up to date information in order for them to carry out their roles as support workers to a high standard and effectively. For example my organisation has just changed the care plans, supervision and appraisal format which I have had regular training to upskill my knowledge to pass on to my staff. Potential barriers can be a fear of a classroom situation, lack of confidence in learning, lack of time because of high workload, motivation, also lack of funding especially in Wales I have personally experienced this when applying to undertake courses for distance learning. A barrier can also be a high turnover of staffing or lack of staffing due to long term sickness. Also some staff fear developing professionally due to personal reasons. They may feel inferior due to age, gender, sexuality, beliefs or even maybe dyslexia. A fear of not being included within the workplace can lead to allegations of non-equality, avoidance of diversity, and this can then lead to staff not being happy in their role. The potential barriers are very complex and all aspects need considering in order to reduce or remove barriers to have effective working and development. There are many different sources you can have for professional development you can discuss these in supervisions and appraisals, in our organisation they provide mandatory training, you can also suggest training you feel would benefit staff to enable them to upgrade our practice. We have regular seminars to update our practice. Distance learning outside of the organisation is another way of expanding…

ABSTRACT This experimental study aims to investigate the effects of using collaborative learning to enhance students‟ speaking achievement. The study using a pre-test and post-test design was conducted with 35 undergraduate students enrolled in a fundamental English course at Bangkok University to examine their speaking achievement on an English oral test before and after they had participated in provided instructional tasks based on collaborative learning. To explore the students‟ views on the use of the collaborative learning, all of the students were asked to complete a student diary after finishing each task, fill in a four scale-rating questionnaire and join a semistructured interview at the end of the course. The data was analyzed by frequency, means, standard deviation, t-test, effect size (Hedge‟s g) and content analysis.
