612508 10-3-13 Throughout life we have many turning points that can determine one’s pathway through life and some that could possibly change us. In “The Great Rat Hunt Story” by Laurence Yep he writes about a personal story that involves the issues that he had to endure as a child which he felt ashamed about, he also talks about his father. As a kid Laurence wasn’t the typical athletic kid like the one his father was when he was his age, his father would attempt to teach his older brother and him everything that there is to know about American sports but Laurence’s asthma always exhausted him. “ While my brother and father practiced, I could only sit in bed, propped up by a stack of pillows.” Laurence never could achieve what his father over-prevailed. Laurence’s father would venture into guiding Laurence into the art of sports, but since Laurence suffered from asthma his lungs would always fail him. “During the times I felt well, I tried to keep up with them, but my lungs always failed me. When I had to sit down on the curb, I felt as if I had let my father down. I’d glance up anxiously when I felt a shadow over me; but he looked neither angry nor disappointed- just puzzled, as if he could not understand why my lungs were not like his… Ashamed, I would gasp. “Go on… and play.” At this point Laurence truly felt that he wasn’t his father’s son just because he didn’t have the stamina to play as long as his father and older brother could. Experiences can characterize one’s life journey and personal development as well. An exemplar from “The Great Rat Hunt Story” is Laurence’s father. As a young child Laurence’s father had to learn what independence was. Laurence’s father became independent at an early age because when he came from China his mother had to stay back because America would not let women tailgate their husbands during that time period. “You have to be tough in this world, boy. There are going to be some times when no one is around

Throughout this time he is trying to find himself after the event that changed all of the Brennan’s lives. Tom begins to question what comes first in his life and what is really important to him. His relationship with his new team in Coghill has helped him to come out of his shell and becomes an important symbol of Tom’s growing up. The process of transitions evoked by attitudes of hostility and forced physical relocation can result in changed attitudes and beliefs leading to growth, change and prolonged suffering. The novel, ‘The Story of Tome Brennan’ by JC Burke is the epitome of the ways in which an individual’s attitudes about their life can be greatly challenged and reformed due to the catalyst of tragedy. Comparably John Schmann’s song, ‘I was only 19’ and Gwen Harwood’s poem, ‘Father and Child’ portrays the less favourable consequences of transitions which can lead individuals to develop…

As the details in this essay illustrate the people who fail are the ones, who’s bigger than they are, and those who prevail, face a problem that’s manageable. In these chapters we have learned that many people need help for they can succeed in life. Adversity around the world around us is very difficult. Prevailing isn’t easy, you have to try enough to get there. If I were a character in the book Tears of a Tiger, I would tell Andy “Feel your heart is it beating? That’s the whole purpose of it, you’ve made it this far through a lot stuff, can’t quit now never quit”!…

Rather than being gifted with parents who were capable of being around for all life’s hardships, I was given parents who were forced to work hours that did not allow for these moments. So while they were slaving away in factories to give their children the type of life they had not been so lucky to have, I decided that nobody knew what kind of person I wanted to be more than I did. So I would be the decider of what was acceptable for me to behave like and what should not.…

The Story of Tom Brennan illustrates that the introduction to a new environment can force an indiviual to rethink their beliefs and attitudes. The plot takes Tom and his family, the Brennans out of their home town after tragedy strikes and they are forced to move and “start from scratch” or readjust to their new surroundings. Tom is an unwilling candidate in choosing to settle down and participate in activities he otherwise enjoyed, due to the recent trauma to his life and the difference that his new settings provides, in terms of their methods of carrying out activities. For instance Tom, in chapter 14, displays an unwillingness to really “get into the game” when he and his football team go away for camp, stating “The 16As would be better than this lot...” implying that the previous footy teams he had been a part of were better than the one he was in because of the way they played. By the end of this camp though his ideals around the matter and towards his fellow players had changed with Tom's thoughts being “I meant it when I said the Bennie's fellas were okay. They were top blokes.” It is in this way that the protagonist's beliefs with regards to the way things should be done and attitudes towards life change as time progresses and he is forced to readjust to his new surroundings. The protagonist's experience of moving into the world has meant that his beliefs and attitudes towards the world have been challenged by a change in his surroundings and the culture of it.…
