Entrepreneurs are the heart and soul of the American economy and are responsible for the creation of many of our Country’s jobs. 99% of all U.S. businesses meet the definition of small business; “a business that is independently owned and operated, does not dominate in its industry and employs fewer than 500 employees” (pg 433). Without individuals that are willing to take risks and who are driven to succeed under their own power, we would not have companies like In N Out Burger. The Snyder family founded In N Out Burger in the pursuit of the “American Dream”; work hard and prosperity will follow. The American Dream is what this Country was founded on. Had the pioneers feared failure, we would not be here today, “Fear: In business, as in life, we all get afraid, but what do we do about it? Successful entrepreneurs learn how to push through fear and embrace their failures. When the fear of failure is looming at the door, these men did not look for an escape route. They pushed on.” (The Daily Record). At some point, it seems, everyone dreams of being their own boss and leaving the politics of corporate America behind, many succeed, but many more fail. “The SBA reports that as many as 60% to 80% of new businesses fail in their first five years of operation” (pg. 436). Failure has several definitions, but ultimately it means the end of a business. What makes one business flourish and another fail? There is no one answer to this question. What makes the ultimate difference in the success of a business, is people. In N Out Burger is an example of a company that continues to thrive because it has great people. The leadership of the company maintains the values that help found the business and invests in its people so it can continue to be a profitable business. In N Out Burger started as a roadside hamburger stand in 1948 by…

To most driving down interstate 35 and Interstate 435, Pleasant Valley Missouri could easily be mistaken for a speck on the map if not for the fifty foot QuikTrip sign that announces to passing travelers of the small town’s existence. This essay will discuss the key people management issues, found in McDonalds, being discrimination due to diversity and low motivation as a result of job specialisation. McDonalds is large corporation with thousands of employees, working in stores situated all over the world. This globalisation of stores insures a need for a diverse workforce in every McDonald’s store, in order to reflect the current diversity around the world. This diversity can in turn cause problems of discrimination, which must be managed to ensure McDonald’s stores remain successful. McDonalds is also known for its consistency in providing the same quality product and service, no matter which store you visit (McDonalds Australia, 2010). In order for McDonalds to ensure this happens, a specialisation of jobs is required, allowing each part of the McDonalds process to be completed with the same quality. Job specialisation can also lead to issues of decreased motivation and decreased job satisfaction if not managed correctly.…

McDonald’s is a well-known fast-food chain restaurant found around the world. They had consistent growth for decades until recently during the 90’s and early 20’s. Although not their official founder, Ray Kroc developed and exploded this fast-food restaurant into what it is today. He insisted on clean restaurants that were family friendly and fast food preparation. Large growth in the early years of the company eventually plateaued bringing about the companies struggles in the 90’s. Policy changes and deteriorating franchise relations created failing realities within the company. Three major issues which occurred were the market-share game in which aggressive expansion policies allowed more restaurants to open while others close by failed, declining restaurant standards with stringent policies creating tensions between corporate and franchises, and large growths of competitor restaurants. Each of these issues helps in the decline of growth in revenue and stock for the company. Knowing the problems is the fastest way in solving them. With the promotion of James Cantalupo, policy changes and a head-on approach started to bring the company back on track. After 16 months, McDonald’s with the help of Cantalupo was able to restore sales and profit.…

Burger King, also known as BK, is the second largest fast food hamburger chain in the world. Founded in 1954, the original “HOME OF THE WHOPPER”, now operates in more than 12,300 locations in 76 countries and territories worldwide (Burger King Corporation, 2011). According to the case study, “two major ways in which Burger King differentiates itself from competitors are the way it cooks hamburgers— by its flame- broiled method as opposed to grills that fry— and the options it offers customers as to how they want their burgers.” (Daniels, Radebaugh & Sullivan, 2011, p. 465) Although the company has expanded their original menu throughout the years, burgers remain their core competency, with the Whopper sandwich as its signature product.…
