(Always- Sunset in Third District) It all started with a quite bit of confusion. I thought the film was about the history of Japan or whatever but then as we arrived in the cinema and start watching the movie I got curious why it was like a comedy and a little bit drama kind of movie. The movie was set back on 1958 at the time of the construction of the Tokyo Tower so the screen’s color was brownish (Classic) and the actors and actresses’ dress were classic too. There are two 2 families in this story the Suzuki family and the Chagawa family. The Suzuki family was more capable than Chakagawa family. To start the story, it is about a teenage girl named Mutsuko arrives in Tokyo to take a job in a major automotive company but finds that she is employed by a small auto repair shop owned by Suzuki. The Suzuki shop lies almost in the shadow of the Tokyo Tower as it rises steadily above the skyline during construction in 1958. Others in the neighborhood also are striving to better themselves as Japan continues to emerge from the shadow of war.
Abandoned by his single mother, young Junnosuke is first handed off to Hiromi but she passes him off to Ryunosuke Chagawa, a struggling writer who only manages to sell adventure stories for boys as his serious novels continue to be rejected.. This two families are sometimes not in good terms but in the end they all became friends when Hiromi give birth to her baby while they’re watching the Olympics.
I like the movie so much, actually to be honest it made my cry. Especially in the scene of Ryunosuke Chagawa when he knew that his father loves him so much, that his father bought all the episodes of his book. It’s like, for how many years of pain and for how many years that he was mad with his father still, father is a father. And the scene of Junnosuke when he needs to come back home because he forgot the pen the Chagawa gave when he’s still a child. Then I was also amazed in what Japan did in the opening of

    A family supper

The short story A Family Supper by Kazuo Ishiguro takes place in Japan in the capital Tokyo, where the narrator, a son visits his father and sister because of his mother’s death. Throughout the whole story, the reader gets the impression of a son who hasn’t lived his life after his parent’s ideology. The differences of two generations are in the story interpreted as very big and very clear. The culture clash and the generation gap are thereby two important themes in the short story. The writer Kazuo Ishiguro tells the story through his fictive character, the unnamed protagonist; “the son” who serves as the reliable first person narrator. The narrator cares much for his father but struggle to express his feelings, and it is here the themes are especially revealed, through their relationship, and the lack of so. He has for some years been living in California in America, which is one of the many disappointments he has worried his parents with. Silence in the story is a motif. The struggle of communicating in the family seems realistic compared to the difficulty in communication between the traditional Japanese generation’s culture and the newer generations. The antique cultural and the generational differences provides the center piece of the short story, a lonely father a widower and his children nourishes a deep love for each other, but how to put on words to describe their feelings seems for them, impossible. The story needs to be interpreted through what is said, but most important in this particular story, is what is not said. Silence is a dominate motif within the dialogues which occur. The silence can be understood as confusion from the narrator, confusion of who he is, what he is doing with the people surrounding him and to the life he has led up to now.…

One note, this movie is not for the faint of heart. There are graphic depictions of violence and even torture. The opening few scenes depict some episodes from Rizal's novels. In one a Catholic priest rapes a Filipina. I guess I now know where the Mestizo mixed blood class came from in the Philippines. In the other scene a Catholic priest beats a child for alleged stealing. Strong stuff and it made me wonder how the Catholic Church could possibly retain any power in the country, if this is what the national hero thought about it. The movie tells the life story of Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines. A three hour epic movie on the life and struggles of his poet and patriotisms. It covers his life from his childhood to his execution at the hands of the Spanish forces occupying the Philippines in the late 19th century. We are also thrown into the world of Rizal's novels filmed in black and white, so we get a glimpse of how he viewed Filipino society under the Spanish heal. The film also through a series of flashback showing Rizal as a genius, a writer, a doctor, an artist, a lover, a friend, a brother and a son, thus giving a rich texture of Rizal’s character. The movie introduces us to the life of subjugation of the Filipino people under the rule of the Spanish friars. From the execution of three Filipino priests in 1872 for alleged subversion to the harsh and unequal treatment of Filipino students in the schools, this film is a stinging indictment of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. I also commend the film for its bravery in showing the evil tyranny of the Catholic Church during that time. Considering that the Philippines is a Catholic nation that is like butchering a sacred cow but alas, Abaya works her magic in depicting the suffering of the Filipinos because of the friars. This is by far the best Filipino movie that I have seen so far. I would urge anyone…
