Rainsford In Richard Connell's The Most Dangerous Game
Rohit George PAP English II 4-15-17

In Richard Connell’s short story “The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford is a man who is trapped on a island where they hunt humans. He begins the story as being a hunter and had no understanding of what the animals he hunted felt, but towards the end he understands what it feels like as he is hunted. His dynamic personality and behavior shows that Rainsford is quick-witted, talented, and level-headed. The fact that Rainsford adversary is General Zaroff, a very skilled hunter who is quite intimidating, and still thinks quickly on his feet proves to the reader that he is quick-witted. “They would be on him any minute. “A certain coolheadedness had come to him…” (p.33). Although he had just fallen off the ship, “it was not the first time he had been in a tight place” (p.33). He knew he had to swim towards the gun shots to immediately get help and not panic about the situation. Throughout his battle with Zaroff he constantly said, “‘I must keep my nerve’” (p.173), trying to calm himself and not give up. If he had not calmed himself, he would've made an irrational move that could've led to his death. “Get ready, General Zaroff” (p. 204), Rainsford said before killing Zaroff. He was getting revenge for everything Zaroff had done and was not panicked about having to duel General Zaroff. As a result of Rainsford’s coolheadedness, he was able to conquer the obstacles he had to face. Rainsford allows the reader to have insight into the type of character who faces problems like they’re easy. He has to keep a cool head and use his previous skills and knowledge to outsmart the hunter and put himself in the place of the hunted. By defeating Zaroff, he demonstrated all three characteristics of being quick-witted, talented, and

How did Sanger Rainsford successfully outsmart General Zaroff in the manhunt? In “The Most Dangerous Game” there are multiple ways Rainsford outsmarts Zaroff but there are three main ways, that are my favorite. The first trap that Rainsford made to get Zaroff is a Malay man catcher. Then Rainsford sets a second trap that is called the Burmese Tiger pit that killed one of Zaroff's best dogs. Finally the last trap is where Rainsford ties his knife to a sapling branch with some vine. The trap didn’t kill Zaroff, it did kill Ivan though. These are my favorite three ways Zaroff was outsmarted by Rainsford.…

Rainsford used reason to survive General Zaroffs incredible hunting skills. First, when he was let put to run for his life and hide he used reason and started “recalling…all the dodges of the fox” (Connell, 10) He ran loops and reran the trails to confuse Zaroff just like the fox did while he was hunting. Second, after weaving a troubling trail Rainsford had to “play the cat of the fable” (11). He climbed up a large tree, rested and waited. He ad a wave of confidence thinking that Zaroff could not find him, but the general was there, under the tree. He made it seem like he knew Rainsford was there but then walked away as if he didn’t see anything. Third, while finding himself sinking in quicksand Rainsford thought back to when he “had dug…

Immediately upon arriving at Zaroff’s chateau, he greets Ivan at the door by saying, “Don’t be alarmed. I’m no robber. I fell off a yacht. My name is Sanger Rainsford of New York City” (4). Since Rainsford is only looking to find help, he communicates with Ivan at the chateau to tell him that he is not from here and needs and would like a shelter to be in for the night. Even though the quotes state that Zaroff is an insane individual, he reassures Rainsford by telling him “Come,” [Rainsford] “We can talk later. Now you want clothes, food, rest. You shall have them. This a most restful spot” (4). Before bombarding Rainsford about his hunting “passion” Zaroff wanted to take good care of his guest while he was with him at his chateau on the island. Thus, Rainsford and Zaroff, two different characters are distinct from each other they share a common similarity…

Ultimately Zaroff can be characterized as Mysterious and cruel. First off one way Zaroff is mysterious is he already knows who Rainsford is without ever meeting each other before. Conelle page 44, “It is a very great pleasure and honor to welcome Mr. Sanger Rainsford, the celebrated hunter, to my home… I am General Zaroff.” As you can see from this quote Zaroff is excited to meet Rainsford and immediately wants to get to know him better. My second reason is Zaroff acts strange in general around Rainsford. Conelle page 44 “The menacing look in his eyes did not change… a black uniform trimmed with gray astrakhan.” By this quote you can tell Rainsford is feeling uncertain and curious of him. You can also tell by his first reaction he is in some…

Rainsford is uncompassionate, this is seen when he’s talking to Whitney. “‘Don’t talk rot, Whitney.’ Said Rainsford. ‘You’re a big game hunter not a philosopher. Who cares how a jaguar feels’ ”.This shows how he’s uncompassionate because he takes no account for how the animals feel. It’s all about the sport. He is also a very proud person. This is seen when he boasts about his sport, hunting, and how it’s the best sport in the word. Rainsford is also courageous. This is seen when he is not deterred by the superstition that surrounds Ship Trap Island. He could also be perceived as strong when he swims to the shore after he is thrown off the boat. This is…

Once the hunter becomes the hunted, everything is put into a new perspective. Rainsford from the fictitious short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell and Eckels from the science fiction “A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury are connected in an almost similar fashion that shows how people can react differently to a problem. Even though their stories are completely different, they are both on a quest to ultimately find self-knowledge. Rainsford and Eckels would react differently under difficult situations because of their different attitudes while dealing with the problem, their ability to perceive their surroundings,…

In the story, The Most Dangerous Game, Richard Connell shows that Rainsford is regretful, anxious, and fearful. First, it is shown that Rainsford is regretful due to the fact that General Zaroff gives him the option to play the most dangerous game or be whipped by Ivan, to which Rainsford chooses to play the game. Rainsford tries again and again to fall asleep at night, but he is helpless with his choice replaying in his mind. “Rainsford could not quiet his brain with the opiate of sleep.” Second, Rainsford’s anxiousness is shown because he is uneasy about the thought of not being able to see the day after next. Although he is a marvelous hunter, there is a possibility that he may be no match to someone who is undefeated in assassinating humans.…

Walking through the rain on a chilly night doesn’t exactly bring fond memories to the mind of many people. Hemingway wasn’t just using the weather in A Farewell to Arms just to add effect to his settings, it actually meant something to the book. Rain expresses deep reality, and depression of the story-book scenes to bring the characters back down to Earth, and sets a vision for the future of the plot by giving grim ideas about the fate of the characters in the novel.…
