Qualitative Research in Logistics Management
In the field of education in Logistics and Material Management research is a key element as it identifies proper procedures and operations in procurement, budgeting, transportation and flow of materials. Research is important as it used to establish or confirm facts, reaffirms result and solves new problems, or develops new solutions (Ross, 2005). The goal in all types of research is to produce new knowledge or understanding of a certain issue or topic. Qualitative Case research provides an opportunity to become more familiar with the material or topic being presented. This method allows for a more involved process and applying this method in my area of interest helps me by not implying or assuming a conclusion but rather an accurate answer based on was the research has guided the result.
Qualitative Case Research emphasizes the importance of looking at variables in the natural setting in which they are found. Detailed data is gathered through open ended questions that provide direct quotations (Jacob, 1988). In my area of operations, I often have to compare different solutions for one question. I conduct research on how to manage assets, allocate resources and how to maintain a consistent flow of materials for production to ensure that mission does not fail due to errors. I find myself more involved in the research process and focus my attention on what is relevant. Gathering sufficient data and re-evaluating existing procedures can aid in determining a timeline to conduct a rehearsal to establish if adjustments are needed.
The findings of my research can greatly contribute to the education in the field of logistics and material management by providing dedicated, efficient and effective managers. In my research of logistics in material management education, I have realized that having managers that are involved in the research process and in the decision making process can enhance the teaching and learning qualities of students.
