Public Speaking
In the past, I have participated in a lot of classes and training dealing with many different topics, but unfortunately, public speaking and/ or communications was not one of them. In fact, the last class that I took even relatively close to this one was in junior high school. In some sense, I guess that this could be thought of as a good thing, because now I can learn at a college level to begin with.

My goals for this class are fairly numerous, but all are based on all around knowledge and improvement of public speaking in a general sense. I want to be able to get up in front of a group of people and deliver a message in a way that makes people want to listen. I'm planning a career in the field of psychology, and as much as I may not like it, I think public speaking will definitely show its face many times. My specific goals for the course include improving on my stance, speaking more clearly, and improving on my fear of speaking in front of a large group.

After reviewing my videotaped speeches, I have noticed that, among other things, I am constantly fidgeting and doing something with my hands like playing with my note cards or something. Also, I am clearly not comfortable with standing up there. Although it is not overly visible on the tape, I can tell that I look very nervous, and I tend to stutter a little and lose my place and focus in the middle of the speeches frequently. I really don't understand why speaking in front of the class bothers me so much. If I were to give the speech from my desk, even though everyone would still be looking at me, I think that I could do a much better job and be more relaxed as well.

I think that improving on these previous aspects will give me enough experience and confidence to at least have a working knowledge and ability to successfully speak publicly. Although my career will probably not involve an immense amount of public speaking, it will require some, and this course will surely provide valuable

I used dread the discomfort that arose from public speaking and avoided every class presentation, which to my frustration, resulted in missing exciting opportunities. During my sophomore year of high school, I chose to take a speech class to embrace speaking opportunities instead of shying away from them. The first few days of class were nerve-racking, but steadily I gained more skill and confidence in my speaking abilities. Towards the close of sophomore year, I stepped into a leadership role, despite my previous anxieties. In a 100-student mock trial, I confidently presented the opening and closing statements for the defense.…

A big portion of my life I was a very secluded and quiet kid from middle school into freshman year of college. Being put in a class where all your assignments, quizzes, and tests were all based on your ability to speak to others sounded like a nightmare to me. Lesson after lesson I learned how to avoid plagiarism, the multiple parts of a speech, and even how to avoid speech anxiety. When it was my designated day to speak, even with all the information taught, it was the worst speech given that day due to how timid I was talking. As the days went hearing other people give their first speech helped me to understand something, that I was not alone. There were others in the class that were as bad or worse than I was at delivering speeches. After the initial speech my confidence for myself grew as I prepared for the speeches throughout the…

My first skill is about how I struggle when communicating in verbal presentations. I’m confident when it comes to verbal communication in conversations or interviews. However when being in front on large audiences I find it hard to be as confident. During college I never needed to prepare my own presentation and present them. It was a new experience for me to get into groups or prepare a presentation by myself in front of my peers. I have experienced around 5 presentations now and I feel I am becoming more confident in myself and don’t get as worried when I know I have to do one. However I still feel like it’s a weakness when it comes to my skills and would like develop myself to become clear and confident when doing presentations. An example of how I no I’m doing better in this skill is that my grades have become higher. I feel I’m weak when doing presentations because I experience feeling nervous and forget to say things when I know what I’m talking about, so it comes across unprofessional and weak.…

And yet teachers are still forcing public speaking into lessons, and mark us on it. A popular defense for this, as said by accredited psychologist, is by ridding yourself of public speaking, you are instead making the fear worse. Instead you should practice it more and more, and get used to it, and make your mind get used to it. Ridiculous! These reasons aren’t relevant at all. In fact, according to a recent poll, 90% of introverts claim that continuing public speaking does not improve their speaking at all, and instead makes their anxiety levels…

During my sophomore year I took public speaking to help me improve my skills of presenting in a large group of people. At first I thought it was going to be an easy class that will help me improve my social skills with other people. I was wrong, when I had to present I was terrified. I was trembling with fear , I didn’t want to mess up nor get laughed at all I was thinking about was that. But once I got it done the fear went away it was only temporarily and as time went by I felt less scared to go up and present. I believe I got more comfortable and didn’t let the fear control me.…
